In all seriousness Owego is a community I've always been curious about. I've been to Binghamton, Elmira, Horseheads, Corning, Ithaca, Narrowsburg, and Callicoon, and yet somehow this cute little town had evaded me. Thanks for sharing your gorgeous photographs with us!
LOL I guess it's hard to believe eh?

My folks were born and raised in the Blakely area outside Scranton. We use to visit relatives there quite often. I haven't been back for about a year and 1/2 now, but hope to visit again this summer.

And you should visit Owego, it seems to be getting back on track.

btw - your photo tours are the best. I look forward to some more.

Did Owego have some tough times not to long ago?

Owego went thru a scary moment....1993..when IBM wanted to divest itself of the Federal Systems Division site there(employed 3000+). A holding company Loral(no comment) purchased the site. In turn Lockeed Martin bought it from Loral. They are more agressive than IBM ever was about persuing leads on gov/mil programs...and are doing well. In fact the whole "southern tier" is doing at least as good as the rest of the U.S. right now....and much better than many areas. The switching of owners of the site and other cutbacks in the area(Binghamton and vicinity) caused a near stop in new home construction from about 93'- 99'. This has turned out to be a blessing in disguise. We are not carrying a glut of recently built/under construction homes that California, Nevada, Arizona, and Florida are.

Yeah, Lockheed Martin has been a big help and has many openings as well. Then, you have Binghamton University expanding and providing jobs as well. That's on top of the fact you mentioned of not overbuilding homes in the area. I believe the area was ranked as the second best housing market in the country recently by some publication and was featured on the Capital NOW show a couple of months ago.

Yes, you are correct about the ranking and that did make the morning national news as well as within the state. Also it made it to a list of tthe top 3 "overlooked" best buy areas by the NY Times 2 years back.

Then, you have the fact that the area is one of the safest areas in the country too.

Kalinka is on a distinguished road
I loved these photographs. I'm not from New York, but my great-great-great grandfather lived in Owego and it was cool to be able to see what it looks like! Thanks for sharing!
