Your commuting options for Rockland are generally drive, train or bus. The most consistent and fastest commute tends to be the express train out of Suffern, which is about 40-45 minutes to Manhattan. There's also the Pascack Valley line out of Nanuet/Spring Valley, but it's a local line.
The bus is inconsistent and doesn't save much time (as far as I know). The Tappan Zee going east in the morning is very inconsistent and there can be lots of traffic. Getting to the city by driving isn't that bad, but you can hit traffic once you're in the city.
I do a door-to-door commute from Nyack to the Upper West Side by train through Suffern / NJ in 1 hour, 20 minutes each day.
As others have stated, home prices tend to be in the $500k-$600k range or more for anything "decent." There are places like Valley Cottage in which you can get typical split-levels in the $400-$500k range.
I would take a look at Trulia or Realtor.com while looking at Microsoft Live Maps for a Bird's Eye or aerial view.
City data has information on school districts - I just usually Google "City Data [name of town] high school" and info will come up.
The Clarkstown and Suffern schools have good reputations - many others are fine, but not outstanding.

I would say so...but you've got areas like Newburgh and Middletown further north. Rockland and Orange have big areas of woods, though, like the Ramapo mountains and Harriman and Bear Mountain state parks. It definitely gets more and more rural as you drive up the Thruway from the Ramapo area.

I read on another post that parking at some of the train stations is an issue. If one were to live driving distance from the Suffern station is parking first come, first serve? is a space usually available? Is there a daily or monthly parking fee?

Scott99999,
Is Spring Valley and Haverstraw (or W. Haverstraw) really as bad as people say?
