Default Looking to leaving NY

We are currently living in Monroe, NY. My husband and I moved up here about 4 1/2 years ago from the city. We thought it would be a better place to raise our family. Well it isn't any better and the cost of living here is enough to make you want to run for the hills. Over the years we've tossed around names of places we would move to first it was Naples, FL then Hurricaine Katrina hit. Then this past year we thought about moving to Houston, TX but you already know what happened with that. Now we seriously don't know where else we would consider. I know moving is a big thing. But I really don't like the cold anymore and I would like a place that we can raise our kids and not move around in fear of the mother nature's wonderful wrath in weather conditions. With the economy the way it is we know we would probably suffer a loss at selling this house right now, but we really ready to move on. Anyone know of any good states they could recommend and that we could research. TIA.-

Not sure, but to be honest, living in NY, you don't really get any serious weather or natural disasters(Thank God). Even if we get snowstorms, unless it is like the Blizzard of '93 or '66, it gets cleared in a timely manner. With that said, I would go with a state like Tennessee and cities like Nashville or Knoxville are nice areas to check out. Maybe Charlotte, as many NYers move down there and like it a lot. Those are some suggestions off the top of my head.

We don't like the cold at all. Conn, NY, PA are very cold states.

VA Yankee will become famous soon enough
Try Central Virginia. We get all 4 seasons and a mild/moderate winter. Cost of living will seem cheap after the NY Burbs.

i live in houston and while we get the occasional hurricane, i wouldn't let that stop you from considering houston as an option. hurricane ike actually did very little in the way of serious damage to the houston area. galveston and areas along the gulf were a different story but most people further inland had to contend with downed trees and no power for a week or so.

the heat, on the other hand is a drag.

Your going to have problems no matter where you live. We lived in NC and the cost of living is probably going to be slightly higher because of housing (unless you live in the sticks). Try the midwest. Personally I would wait a year or two for the economy to stabilize.

I grew up in Middletown, and currently live in Virginia Beach. We bought a place near Beckley, WV after searching the entire country (NY, NH, ME, CO, ID, MT, NC, TX, UT). It just offered us the best of everything we wanted with the least of the things we didn't want. We have some cold weather, but not like NY, we have some warm weather, but not like FL. The biggest draw for us was the inexpensive real estate, the low property tax ($900/ yr on 53 acres w/ house and barn), the cleanest air and water in the country (Hinton, WV), free tuition at WVU if children graduate with a 3.0 HS GPA, but most of all the people. Just good folks. I drive a truck with NY plates, and everyone still waves, just like I've been there my whole life.
Don't discount WV based on the stereotypes! We keep that alive as a filter!

I relocated from CT many years ago to Raleigh NC. and love it. I would recommend that you research this area. We have so many people from the North joining us here it is amazing. I have many clients from up your way. I would say if you have never been here. it would be a great vacation to check out the area. If you would like any info pm me and I would be happy to help you.
