Waterloo (exit 41) driving to the Thruway you have to take 414 to get on the Thruway... 414 houses the largest dump in NYS and you will have to deal with the tractor trailer traffic hauling in trash from NYC and all other parts of the northeast for that matter... It is funny that goggle maps says it is 55 minutes to Rochester and 55 minutes to Syracuse...
Geneva (exit 42, actually the exit is in Lyons, NY) is only a 5 minute drive from Geneva an easy straight drive down 14 and it is not hat bad in the winter. Last march I drove from Geneva to Syracuse and back in a BAD ice storm, not bad at all, only took me 15 minutes long to get to Syracuse.
Canandaigua might be more of drive to the thruway(exit 43 or 44, I forget) but is a great town... Living in Canandagua your husband wouldn't need the thruway to get to Rochester, just 332 to 490 services Rochester and it's suburbs...
Another thing you have to remeber is the thruway does not directly service Rochester, it is outside of the city... Rochester is actually the only city in upstate ny that feeds directly into the city... Rochester relys on 390/490/590 to connect the thruway with the actual city of Rochester...
To have about the same driving time you are talking about either Geneva/Lyons or Waterloo... It's not like it is a log drive from either of those towns, it's 5 minutes...
FYI Lyons actually wants an Amtrak station, but that is on the empire line, it's not a commuter train.
There is no such thing as a commuter train or bus betwen Rochester and Syracuse. Believe me it would be nice to have, but there is no such thing.
