Hello everyone,
I'm applying to Syracuse University, my husband to Rochester.
Does that make sense?
]Is it possible to live in a nice place in the middle and travel the distance by train, bus, or carpool? How long will it take to travel? Is there a nice place in the middle with a train going both ways?
If you did find a central location it would be at least 45 mins each way by car
as for the Amtrak there is no stop in between the two
have you ever been to either city?
You might want to look into Clifton Springs/Geneva/Waterloo...... they wouldn't be TOOOOOOOOO horrible of a commute and a midway point..... but winters would be tight......it would be longer than 45 min in winter...... but DOable.....rough but doable....and they aren't METRO areas.... they are pretty RURAL.....
I live in Rochester.... taught near Clifton Springs and my mother DID commute to Clifton Springs to teach for about 12 years. VERY RURAL area....small town....Geneva is nice....again.... pretty small....

At least the Thruway is usually pretty clear thanks to the Transportation Authority they have.

Good luck no Train service. However if you dont mind the comute there are some nice comunities off of the N.Y. Thruway Rt 90 Also if you are looking more rural you might check out Rt 104 between the two however Rt 104 can be nasty in the winter. Regards Bmg
Don't trust Rt 104.....it is nasty.....go I 90 if you going to commute. It is a safer bet of being plowed and cleared- and SAFER to drive on in the winter. That will be cleared FIRST.... Plus Rt 104 goes through a lot of towns with a lot of stop lights... you don't just get on and GO from here to there. No trains.... it will be all car the whole way....
The only somewhat developed town that would be central between Rochester and Syracuse on I-90 would be Phelps. Pretty much just a family friendly little town surrounded by cabbage fields. They really like Saurkraut and have a big festival for it every year that gets national atention sometimes. haha.

Really? What about Waterloo or Seneca Falls? Wouldn't Geneva be another one that is right there?
