North Rockland County Questions
While our first choice (from what I am reading anyway on city-data) is that clarkstown schools are the way to go, we prefer the new construction in areas of pomona and stony point.
My specific quesiton are:
How bad are the North Rockland Schools, with all the lovely homes, I would find it hard to believe that the schools would be that terrible.
What about the commute times to major shopping areas (the malls--palisades or woodbury commons)?
Which towns have that "main street feel"...stony point, pomona, thiells? Any one of them.
How would the commute be to Mahwah.
How is the real estate market up there...we are seeing the new construction homes that were once in the 650's and now we are seeing alot of homes that 500...with some even having some attractive "rent to own". We are comming from dutchess, so we know the the landscape..but rockland is new to us....
We have children in elementry school..so schools are important..but we also recognize that parental involvment in a childs education is important as well...meaning "if we dont get into THE BEST school district"...I can still sleep easy knowing that we live in a family friendly area with a GREAT school district.
Plus we can get a little more home for the money as well.

I don't think you will get much of a "main street" feel in any of those towns, though I don't know Stony Point especially well.
Pomona is typically East Ramapo schools, which you should avoid.
Stony Point and Theills are North Rockland schools. Not a particularly prestigious school district, but that's partially because it's very large and very diverse. You can get a quality education in North Rockland.
In terms of commuting to shopping areas -- Sometimes it seems no two points in Rockland are further than 15-20 minutes away. The Palisades Mall is centrally located, and should fit that estimate.
The drive to Mahwah shouldn't be too bad.. You shouldn't be hitting the NYC-bound rush hour traffic, so I'd estimate a 20-30 minute drive from North Rockland.
If you really want to be close to Mahwah, try Suffern. The schools are probably a bit better than North Rockland, and you should still be able to get value in Suffern.
