Keep giving the Williston and Chittenden County area a look if the job offer still applies. I completely agree that the cost of living can be high and a source of frustration, but many of the issues that come up with frequency in other locales do not apply here. I have lived in many places around the US and grew up in NYC. The lifestyle here is great, especially for raising kids.

I'm not familiar with Elmira at all but there are many small communities in upstate NY, not near NYC, where house prices are that low. In fact we up here are as shocked as you are that prices are so unbelievably high in the rest of the country.
