Best Diverse Family areas of Upstate NY
Best Diverse Family areas of Upstate NY
My Family and I are looking for a new place to call home. Can anyone recommend any areas that have diversity, nice sense of community, good schools and a steady economy? We live and work at NYC, our kids are growing and we are in a need of change. Any info will help.
Thanks in advance.

Do you need to stay within commuting distance to keep your NYC jobs, or are you looking for a total change?

I am looking for a total change, if possible; that all depends on the local economy.
Thanks

Well, if you are 'decoupling' from NYC you have a HUGE area to consider! Rural, urban, suburban? There are several recent threads on the board essentially giving advice and answers to your very question. The first place that comes to my mind is Ithaca...

When you say diversity..
I assume you mean racial diversity.
I understand you wanting a "nice sense of community, good schools, and a steady economy." But why precisely do you need diversity? And if indeed that is important to you, why not just stay in NYC? Help me here.

Yes I do mean racial diversity. As we all know NYC is a very diverse place. I do enjoy having the different cultures, foods and so on. I could go on for while on this subject. Although diversity has its place it does not play a role on my decision on wanting to move. I know upstate New York is not like NYC, (what place is?) but this is expected; however some diversity would be nice.

You can try Orange and Southern Ulster Counties, I would not suggest living in the city limits of either Newburgh or Middletown.
New Paltz???? Other places you might like would be Monroe and possibly a few of the towns in Southern Dutchess county. Kingston has its undesireable areas but still some nice areas left.
New Windsor is pretty diverse as well. I would avoid the areas that abut Newburgh and go for the western areas of the town. Scotchtown is nice as well.

I personally think the rochester NY area east side is a great place to live. I moved there 20 years ago and recently moved away. I have to say that Fairport, Perinton,Bushnells basin, Pittsford are all very nice areas with great school districts. I now live in the Buffalo Ny area suburbs. I thinkit is a very nice area many nice suburbs but cant tell you about the school dist as I have had no experience with them. I can tell you that moving away from the down state NY area m,any years ago I have no regrets..it is much nicer,,cleanerm, friendlier and family oriented in the upstate regions of NY. good luck in your search

New Paltz is nice. I did not like Kingston. I have been to Monroe, nice areas, good schools but it’s a little on the pricey side if you are looking to buy. I have checked into South of Ulster, how is the commute to NYC?
What do you know about Albany, and its surrounding areas?
Thanks
