Hi, don't know if I am in the correct forum. I am English, live in Spain.
Does anyone know Amenia? About 18 years ago I bought an album/book from a bookshop in Cold Spring. It is a collection of letters and stamps from a guy who was travelling around the world by steamship in 1938/9. Just been reading it again and the letters were addressed to Amenia High School. Does anyone know anything about the place or is able to point me in the right direction to findout more? |

Amenia is about 2.5h north of New York City, in Dutchess County. You might want to re-post this on the New York (rather than New York City) board.

Amenia is just due west of Sharon, CT (which probably mean much to you, does it?). It is just due west of the most northwestern corner of Connecticut. I spent a lot of summers there as a teenager. It very rural, with diary farms and at least one winery. A bit like North Devon, but with more hills. I loved it there. Thanks for making me think of it again!

Hi,
I am 55 years old and have lived in Amenia all my life and my father's family before that. My aunts and uncles all attended Amenia High School. AMENIA.GOV will take you to the historical society. I bet my aunt will know the person the letters were sent to! |

Thanks for the information. Have looked at the website for amenia, really interesting to have a bit of background to the Album. Unfortunately there aren't any names, it may have been a project as the letters are addressed to the sixth grade from a person called James C Wilson. He did a world tour and sent a letter from every country he visited during 1938-39. An interesting insight into the countries before the world changed forever.
