Any predictions? What will be the next attractive relocation spot? (Mexico: homeowners insurance, homes)

I'm 25, I figure I have at tops maybe another 5 years left living in NYC. It has become virtually impossible to stay in NY for people my age group, with the exception of some areas upstate.

I never seriously considered N.C. as a relocation area.

Florida maybe, but most of the more attractive economic areas are overdeveloped at this point.

Ditto pretty much for California.

Las Vegas maybe, I don't know, I've heard a lot of negatives.

Arizona is a little interesting, so is New Mexico.

Do any other places come to mind, help me out.

A friend of mine just moved from Tucson, AZ to California and said that housing prices in AZ have gone through the roof in recent years (which is why they were able to buy in CA!). So it sounds like Arizona is more of a "past" trendy relo area than a "future" one. Plus the heat down there is brutal.

We know several people who moved to Vegas within the past 3 years and came back. Sounds like it's not nearly what it's cracked up to be.

The next hot relo market? Wish I knew, but if I had to make a guess I'd say maybe the Pacific Northwest (Oregon, Washington, Colorado), western PA, southeastern Ohio? I think coastal areas will decline in popularity due to weather risks and worsening problems/rates for homeowners insurance.

Las Vegas is beautiful. Always something to do there. A real hotstop for people in the northeast. Most people I know who have gone there love it there.

I'll be going there in about 3-4 years.

I ditto the midwest....Alot of jobs that are looking to pay decent relo bucks for great talent these days.

Look into the capital cities of other states and see what they have to offer.

Believe it or not..Columbus, Ohio has ALOT of major corporations over there and the northeast part (I think) is so clean and beautiful, that its amazing....I have parents that live their in dublin, and I kid you not, the way the lawns are manicured and people take pride in their surroundings is amazing. I thought we would be bored visiting, but the downtown area always has some great nightspots as well and if you want to go to chi town (chicago)..its only a couple of hours away.

I have seen alot of posts on tennesee (sp?) perhaps that is the next hot spot after people get tired of georgia and the carolinas.

I have had friends move down to texas (if you can handle that kind of heat).

Forget " Las Vegas " if you have kids, at least thats our opinion. Not only do the schools rate incredibly poor, they are very overcrowded, gangs ( good and the bad areas) Drunks on the roads 24/7, the bars & Casinos never shut, i mean never, so that means people can drink whenever. Everyday there is a fatal accident. Drive By shooting happen daily.

And like i said raising a family here is a real bad idea, ok lets say you skip the public schools and go private, if you can afford to great. But, still your children will be raised in a casino/gambling city. We live in Henderson ( a suburb of Vegas ) and you will find slot machines everywhere, so the kids see that crap, and that attracts the bums. Our local grocery stores have slot machines, 7-11, Target, Walmart, K-mart and so on.

Plus the homes are no longer all that affordable. For a 4 bed 2 bath no basement your looking around $380,000 in a good area, again all those problems i mentioned happen all over Vegas/Henderson.

We are moving within a year, just have to finish researching where to move next! Maybe Raleigh NC , would go back to LI , but the cost of living there is a joke! PA is also an option.

NM is too remote for most people though Santa Fe has caught the eye of people recently.

Just north of you is Ulster, Dutchess and Orange county. Orange County is one of the fastest growing counties in the US, the fastest growing county in NYS, and has been for quite some time. To the west is Pike county which is the fastest growing county in PA. These areas have become popular with people who cannot afford NYC but need to work or play in NYC.

I always hesitate before recommending NM to anyone. I made the move from Orange County to NM when I was 19 and for me it worked out nicely. (I'm now in Pike County) But it is a pretty big culture shock and you should be aware of the environmental concerns of living anywhere in the desert southwest - namely the water conservation issue. It is an exceptionally beautiful state, but most people are best suited to be visitors and leave it at that.

Seems like many are moving to NC or TN lately from NYS but frankly if you look around NYS and MA you can find some nice places that do not kill you in terms of cost of living.

So I would suggest checking out the Pioneer Valley of MA, areas north of Exit 17 on the NYS Thruway, Pike County PA, the I 90 corridor going through NYS and all the way to exit 10 in MA...and see if you can't find a place you can afford without having to travel 2 time zones to do it. Vermont and NH are pretty states too and your liveability is quite high in those states.

On one of those "top 10 websites" NYS is ranked like 32nd in liveability (1 being the best) and neighboring MA is ranked 7th. I think when you get trapped in NYC and everything is so expensive you just equate all of NYS and the North East with being expensive and it is not necessarily so.

So many people run from NY and come to realize they are not happier in their new state. Good luck with your decision!

Utah is pretty how are the home prices and schools?
