Default US citizen living Canada working US

Does anyone know if it is ok for a US Citizen to live in Canada and work
in US without applying for a Canadian Perm. Resident Card. I have a cottage home in Canada and got a job transfer close to NY/Quebec border. Can I
cross the border everyday to work in US and back to Canada to sleep at my
Canadian house? Let me know...thanks

Is this permanent or just over the summer?

I dont know about the law, but I know of someone who lives in Canada permantly and works in the US - also a lot of people own cottages and they commute over the summer months - obviously it is do-able, I just don't know the specifics of it in regard to the law. Enjoy that cottage !!!!!!!!

As a US Citizen, you will be limited to living in Canada 6 months out of the year unless you obtain the necessary status that authorizes you to. If it appears to the Canadian authorities that you are not following their laws, you may find youself in hot water.

Would there be an exception to the rule if the OP was Native American? Specifically, I am thinking of someone who is Mohawk -- St. Regis Res. is in both countries/on both sides of the river, isn't it?

I'm an American living in Canada. I was getting my residency while living in Canada and was told that I may not be let into the country if I leave before obtaining my residency. Well I did leave and came back. Before I did, I went to the border to see if I'd have any troubles. They told me no. They look for people like you! They look for Americans living in Canada and working in the US and NOT obtaining their residency in Canada. They can deny you re-entry into Canada any time they want to. But I think they look for people who are staying in Canada for a long term.

However, because it's for the summer and you own a summer cottage, thus vacationing, it may be a bit different. I'd stop at the crossing and ask the border agent.

I know Native Americans can generally come and go as they please. I'm sure there's paperwork with that, too.

Just because one Border Agent tells you one thing may not be what the next one says/does. You should contact a lawyer or Homeland Security. Then you'll have the law and a leg to stand on.

Where do you plan on paying taxes? if you spend too much time out of the US, you will have to pay taxes in the country you are living in. You don't have to be a resident to owe taxes!
