Why do we live in upstate New York? Honestly, it is because that's where the Army told us we need to be. At first I was very hesitant. I am a Southern girl and I have never experienced a "real winter" in all my 36 years. But so far, I like it up here. I will have to see how I feel in April (LOL!) but I am glad that we agreed to move to the Fort Drum area.

Soon2BNYer...I may/or may not have passed along some info to you(don't remember offhand) prior to your move to the area. At any rate, there is another request for info from a mil/family on the forum. You would probably be a good source of current info, as I last was up there in 03'.

I would be happy to help. I found the thread and added my two cents (and then some!) to it.
Thanks!

This environment is breathtakingly beautiful
I've read a billion posts on this website but this one seems to be the most 'charming'! No one seems to have bad mouthed where they are moving from, or why they are moving out of NY. Just the facts and some of the most incredible pictures I've ever seen. Being a skeptic I see the blue water and skies of Upstate NY and wonder if those pics have gone through an extended 'touch up' process.. and then I read the genuine posts and know in my heart thats the way nature made them, that's the way people photographed them ... and that's just how they look in real life.
I can hardly wait to come visit! I'm a BIG Canadian and New England-aholic, but New England even for all it's charms and history looks like the Readers Digest Condensed Version of Up State New York!

In july i went up to Fulton county.Mayfield to be exact.I live on Long Island and it was my first time ever going upstate. It was SO beautiful.People were waving at me and they were so friendly. That is something i am definately not used to living on Long Island.I think where i was,was kind of the "boonies" but literally up the road was a bunch of stores and some fast food places. It was like being in a different world. The amount of open space was amazing.Driving down one of the roads with not a single car behind me.We even came by a drive in movie theater!!The place i stayed was a lake house on Sacandaga Lake.So gorgeous.I only spent two days there but i feel like i know the place and some of the people.Everyone talks to you.It had that real small town homey feel to it.It was just amazing.I could go on and on forever about how beautiful it really is.Im hoping to go up again in a few weeks to see how it looks in the fall.Ive heard its breathtaking. You all are so lucky to call it home.

Dogcrazy (I love that title)
Please please please post some pics if you can. I live in AZ we won't see fall until January.. and the only people waving to you on the street here are usually about to do a drive by.. ! My soul ( and by the sounds of it quite a few others on this site) craves peace, quiet, community, and wide open spaces!

THX - Dogcrazy
THX - I did mean pics when you go back and I HAVE seen pic's on the net. It's just hard to believe anyplace can still be that beautiful, and CLEAN! I truly can not think of another time in pics when I've seen a blue sky SO BLUE unless the pic was retouched. To read the blogs of people who have visited and fell in love, and of the folks that call it home, plus seeing the pics makes you wonder if Up-State NY is not one of the best kept secrets in the US!
