SIL is taking project in Oswego
he will be managing quality improvement project at a nuclear reactor somewhere outside Oswego from what he just found out---
Google says there are three in the area
don't know how close their motel/hotel will be to which ever one they are working at...
he has just finished project in St Louis and it was pretty cold there but understand this part of NY state is deep-freeze county in winter and sublime (minus the black flies) in summer...
what kind of cold weather gear does he need to have to make walking from car to plant manageable--
is there anything he should keep in the rental car in case there is breakdown?
I think he uses ATT for his cell phone or maybe Verizon--any problems with either provider in this area?
how often is he likely to have weather problems getting in or out?
He will be flying through Atlanta probably from Sarasota/Bradenton airport in FL...going from Paradise to the Artic every week--how lucky can one guy get...
any roads to definitely avoid no matter how good they look on a map?
what about some good local restaurants in Oswego area -- he will be managing the project and has lot of overtime so needs something open late probably...

Well.....Tell him to bring something to bundle up with. A heavy coat, gloves, boots, a hat and maybe a scarf too.
Keep a blanket, a first aid kit and something like flares in the car, just in case.
I believe both providers are in the area. So, there shouldn't be a problem with that.
Just have him take Route 481 to Oswego, which is the major highway that goes right into the city. He might have to take Route 104, which is a 2 lane road, but is maintained well, usually.
As for restaurants in Oswego, try Canale's Vona's, Ruby Tuesday's, Oswego Sub Shop, NY Pizzeria and Friendly's, among others. Here's a list of restaurants in Oswego: restaurants in Oswego, NY - Google Maps
Also, Oswego is a small city with a college and it is a city known for having many bars too. So, there are people out and about late into the night too. Here's more information on the city: The Official Web Site of the City of Oswego

I think Oswego is a city that is going to go places in the next 20 years or so.
I think when Upstate NY begins to improve and turn the corner that Oswego is going to do better than most.

I agree. It has the setting, they still have some good jobs left and it's location should help them in the future.

There are black flies in Oswego?
Never encountered any black flies in the suburbs of Syracuse.

yeah I never heard of black flies in Oswego either. Maybe you are thinking of the Adirondacks or the deep woods in the spring?

guess I was mistaken about the black flies in summer--not familiar with the area personally--
any one fly regularly out of Syracuse airport--does it handle the winter weather w/o lot of plane cancellations?
What are the major airlines there?
and is there much difference in quality of rental cars as far as you know?
TripAdvisor had some recent positive comments about some of the hotels in Oswego--anyone else have recommendations about decent place to stay that has restaurant either with it or fairly close?

The Syracuse airport has one of the biggest snowplows in the world (32 feet wide)...and has won the airline industry's "snow crew" award 7 times.
About Syracuse Airport: Hancock Field
The airlines are JetBlue, USAir, Northwest, American, Continental, Delta, and United.

why this was moved to the NY general forum vs Syracuse is beyond me--this board's moderators must have way too much free time...
