I forgot to mention, you won't have to deal with any of that nonsense in Canandaigua...

lol.....affluenza. My brother lives in Pittsford and we will be staying with him while we are up there next week looking for houses. I'm going to have to tell him that one! Pittsford is fairly affluent, but it's not like it's beverly hills or Fairfield County Connecticut or anything. It's more upper middle class than blue-blood aristocraticness. But you are right, I wouldnt' consider Pittsford, Brighton, or any of Rochester's real suburbs part of the Fingerlakes.

My family and I just got back from a week of vacation in upstate from NC. We can't wait to move back, and right now our main focus is Canandaigua. It seems to have what we're looking for. Anyone have any thoughts or info on rental houses in the area?

Sorry, I don't have any thoughts/info on rental houses. I am sure there are some in town.
My wife and I were just talking about the Finger Lakes becoming the 'next big thing.'
This will seriously bum me out.
We've planned on moving around for education and settling in the Finger Lakes to start a family within the next few years. I saw an article in the Democrat and Chronicle (Rochester's daily rag) about wine country values going up because vintners were priced out of Napa & Sonoma... if retirees start spending their nest eggs and all of the ex-pats return, plus the Californicators show up, it might actually get ruined. I guess I know how South Floridians feel now.
I always figured there would be some old farmhouse for me to buy and fix up (because there's always been an abundance of 'em), but I am not so sure anymore.
I took a wine tour last year with a realtor who said most of the buyers were from out-of-state or the NYC area.
I can't imagine driving around in the Finger Lakes and seeing mcmansions and whatnot.
Well, at least Skaneateles has a fierce, unbreakable planning board.

Make you more envious of Upstate ny
hi
I've been here for a week, come from the driest state on the driest continent (south australia) and the whole area is beautiful. Green, lots of trees, water everywhere. The casual attitude people up here have to water is difficult. We were at Niagara Falls on Tuesday 4th and i wanted to take the water home with me! Phenominal amounts!! Bit jealous of that. Peolple from the south who are contemplating moving here, you will think you are in heaven. Can be a bit muggy, but we have come from the dead of winter, and I know which I prefer. I haven't worn long sleeves since i arrived last Friday.
The people have been real friendly, happy to help with anything. Apparently I have an accent! (i'm sure it's not me). We had to move rooms one night and i left my laptop in the other room (it was midnight and i was tired) and the cleaner handed it in to reception
Auburn is real pretty, the town mayor really wants to push the town ahead economically, but there are a lot of what ifs involved, but at least getting out there and giving it a go.

I believe there is a prison in Sonyea, near my hometown of Dansville (Livingston County). I've heard positive remarks, but never have spoken to anyone in Sonyea, about relatively high paying jobs.
I don't think that prisons cause much tension. I currently live in the Sacramento area and a close friend lives very near to Folsom prison. Folsom is considered one of the most desirable communities in the greater Sacramento area and has the housing prices to prove it.
I will visit the Finger Lakes area in two weeks partly to scout out small towns for retirement and will spend part of the week in Penn Yan. I'm not considering Dansville because it is not near a lake and also because its little downtown is rundown. It is much changed form when I grew up there in the 50's and 60's.

I grew up in Bath in the 80's and it was a great town to live in ... so I am surprised that there might be negative things said about it now. Bath is the county seat for Steuben County, so we received some press about that kid from Savona that killed another kid ... but that was only because the trial was in Bath.
I loved growing up there, though, and being in the heart of Finger Lakes Country. We practically lived on Keuka Lake during the summer and loved every minute of it!
One other town that hasn't been mentioned yet is Corning. It's not directly on a lake, but only a 10-15 minute drive from several. With Corning, Inc. (formerly Corning Glass) being a big player in town in the 90's especially, the town grew into a more yuppy mind set than surrounding areas. Ithaca and Watkins Glen have some nice areas, but I'd prefer Hammondsport, Naples, Bath, or Penn Yan (or some no-named town in between).

please please don't tell everyone about the fingerlakes. just keep it a pleasant secret amongst us that live here, and let them that live else where stay there and suffer. it will shortly become a place we no longer like. in my area (b'port) we now have a new house in the neighborhood of 8 to 9 thoousand sq ft over looking k- lake dominating the view. hundreds of years the side hill has been empty but no more. i have yet to talk to anyone in the area who feels the house was well placed, but that is the direction the lakes are taking. it does change quickly.

By B'port you don't mean Brockport do you? That's not really in the fingerlakes, but there is a lot of new construction going on there as people continue to spread out in the Rochester area.
