Moving to Poughkeepsie area... (Montgomery, Hyde Park: real estate, to rent, house)

If you move to Pough-town.. stay away from the city of Poughkeepsie, the towns and the "arlington" districts are very pleasant. If you're still set on poughkeepsie, i would suggest areas off of Rt 44, or Rt 55. My aunt, and my grandparents both live in these areas, and they are some of the nicer areas. Poughkeepsie really isnt a bad place, its just the city thats not so nice. There are some nice apartment complexes off Inniss Avenue, in the town, which are very safe neighborhoods, minutes away from Dutchess Community College, and is almost in the center of the town. And i believe is zoned in the hyde park school district. Further north, Inniss avenue turns into Salt Pointe Turnpike, (a gated community right off SPT on North Grande Avenue,) and another mile north on SPT is "The Gables", a large development with really cute houses which are basically two trailers put together. Some may call it a "jazzed up trailer park" but its very respectable, and very cute) I supposse its all about what you hear. You might find something you really enjoy. If not theres always Hyde Park.. which is more rural than Poughkeepsie, or perhaps across the hudson, theres Highland, New Paultz and Kingston.

Vassar student here, and I second the notion that Poughkeepsie itself is a nice place to live. One just needs to distinguish the CITY from the TOWN. The city district, which constitutes the area centered on Main St. roughly east of the Hudson river and west of Raymond Ave is very run-down and unpleasant. Outside of that, the TOWN districts are very pleasant. The neighborhoods that most impress me are those south/southwest of Hooker Avenue down by the College.

If you have kids, the Arlington School District is supposed to be the best in that area. I agree, LaGrange is probably best, lots of shopping near by, but far enough from the city. And, they are building all over there --- Westchesterites (me included, I am from Westchester, but not moving up there myself -- heading south -- NC) are flocking by the droves up there for the cheaper housing prices and RE taxes. We know quite a few who have gone there and love it.

Poughkeepsie City --- not good, Poughkeepsie Town of --- very nice.

Lived in Dutchess County for 35 years, I would definitely not move to Hyde Park, school system is scary, horrible. Arlington districk is the best but home prices are high there. Town of Poughkeepsie is nice, around Spratt Park,
Red Oaks Mill, parts of Lagrange. Red Hook is nice, away from the hustle bustle. Stay away from west side of river, you do not want to face crossing the Mid Hudson bridge everyday.

I have family in Poughkeepsie. They love it up there. I have family in the Lagrange area. Years ago that was really nice. I could remember you couldn't see another house for at least a mile or so. Everything these days are through the roof. I would just look around and wait things out. The market is not really great right now. I know some area's are better then others. Lots of luck..

OKAY. There is a difference between the TOWN and CITY of Poughkeepsie. People tend to often get them confused. I live in the town and we have a different zip code, post office, school district, police department, town board, taxes, etc. The city of Poughkeepsie is not bad. It has a bad rep because there are African Americans. Meanwhile, Poughkeepsie is a large city. The population of blacks is only 8% and are concentrated around the center of town. The Mid-Hudson Valley has many things to do. Check out the Chamber of Commerce site to find more. Red Hook and Hyde Park are more rural and red-neckish, if that's your thing. If you live in New Paltz, how heavy is the traffic going over the bridge to Poughkeepsie?
I wouldnt mind being there so I can be close to the MTA Railway for work.

I do that route occasionally and its heavy around rush hour along 299 and over the bridge, but still you are only talking about 20-25 mins (30 at worst) from New Paltz into downtown POU.

It annoys me because I remember when 299 was quite rural and hardly used. Now it is very built up, but this pales compared to the commute into NYC etc.

But from Redhook you can hop right over the Rhinecliff Bridge and have all shopping etc...on the north side of Kingston (15 mins) so you wouldn't need to go down to the main POU shopping (along route 9 below the city).

....LaGrange & Arlington are quiet & nice, there are alot of small towns in the area. Im from Wappingers Falls- right next to Poughkeepsie. All of Dutchess County is beautiful!!
