Red face Moving from Texas to the New York/Pennsylvania Area

My husband is being relocated out of state. His office will be out of Horseheads, NY. We have 2 kids, 10 & 8, so we are looking for great schools and a great neighborhood. Neither of us have ever even been to this part of the country. To say I am nervous about such a huge move doesn't quite cover it. A friend of mine grew up in and around New York and she suggested Corning? Can anyone please advise?

Corning is a very nice town with a nice shopping district. It is also near the Finger Lakes so there would be plenty to see and do.

Corning's Gaffer District - Corning, New York - Shopping - Entertainment - Museums - Food

New York Tourism -VisitFingerLakes- FingerLakes NY - Official info for Ontario County Accommodations, Dining, Events, Lodging, Wineries, Recreation

It's also the home of Corning Glass company, which has the leading glass museum in the country.

Recently, the Corning Area School District has implemented the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (grades 6-10) and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (grades 11-12). The Corning middle and high schools were authorized as "IB World Schools" in February 2005.

My sister now lives in Painted Post village (a Village in NYS is a separate political unit), Corning school district, West High, and they seem very happy with the area. There is a bit of a mix of in-town and older or newer suburban style neighborhoods to choose from. Box stores are around the Arnot Mall which is between Horseheads and Corning.

Horseheads village itself is an older suburban area. It runs into Elmira Heights (which is in the valley, why???) and the City of Elmira which has seen better days, like 100 years ago. I know someone who moved on from being an elementary school principal in Elmira and he tells of dealing with a first grader with a gun, years ago.

The small villages of Watkins Glen and Montour Falls are close to Horseheads and have separate school districts, don't know how good they are. Watkins Glen can have tourist crowds on big holidays, race weekends, the Italian Festival, and in the fall. Montour Falls is quieter, has a huge waterfall opposite the end of the main street. Schuyler County is very pretty, less expensive and less lefty politically charged than adjacent Tompkins County around Ithaca.

One could live in Ithaca area and commute to Horseheads, many do the reverse. Search many threads on here for Ithaca.

Be sure to consider PROPERTY TAXES in your budget when you are looking. My sister's $200k house would be north of $300k in the Harrisburg area - but her $10,000 annual property tax bill might be $4,000 here.

Taxes are much lower over the PA border. Schools do not have the same resources and roads are not paved as frequently. Septic tank regulations in PA are more draconian than in NY. Schools are considered better in Wellsboro than in the immediate border area. (Note that neither PA nor NY have county school districts, the schools cover less geographic area than a county, but generally a wider area than a single town, village, or often city.) Wellsboro is a very pretty community, generally considered less welcoming to outsiders than Ithaca. There are a number of threads in the PA forums about Wellsboro.

Horseheads wouldn't be bad as the Arnot Mall is there and a lot of the other shopping in the area is there too. I believe the schools are good too. Here's some information on that:https://www.nystart.gov/publicweb/Di...t=070901060000
