NY-NC Similarities

Thanks!

I lived in NC for 12 years and have lived in NYC for 7.
The only thing similar about NY and NC is that people in both places drink water and breath air. That is about the only similarity. Otherwise, there are almost no similarities. Maybe you could find some similarities between the up state country people and the country folk in NC, but that is where it ends.
Of course, you also need to know that NC is very different from out West and the Midwest for that matter. Out west you don't have the whole North/South - War of northern aggression thing going on.
We have family in NC - But my sister from LA says she can't imagine moving there.

time to go?
I've lived on Long Island for 45 years(New Hyde Park). I have been very seriously considering moving to Raleigh/Cary NC. I've been following all the entries concerning the pros and cons of moving from NY to NC and I am amazed at the animosity between the two groups. Calling myself a true native NY'er (having traveled through NY State-visiting all parts of NY) I have the following observations. The overwhelming majority of downsate NY'ers (NYC-Long Is.-White Pl.) are overwhelmingly rude, obnoxious, and filthy. NYers are rude and downright nasty. I should know--they're my friends and family!!! People here think nothing about throwing a big bag of McGarbage out of their mercedes, and then complain that no one cleans the streets. NY/Long Is. is famous for having Multi million dollar houses directly next to the shacks that house those who built the houses. I live in the most expensive county in the COUNTRY (nassau). My home taxes are $9,000(thats cheap) - I live next to the main line of the LI Railroad (228 trains a day--noisy like $&^$)and I have people rummaging through my garbage for who knows what while I sleep. I've tried as hard as I can to find something to be positive about here on LI -- but I dont think it exists anymore.

Can't say I blame you. I wouldn't live on Long Island either (of course technically I do, because Brooklyn is on Long Island but you know what I mean).
If l couldn't live in the city and needed to live in the area, the only place I can imagine is Westchester. Long Island is beautiful, but you seem so trapped. The traffic seems a lot like LA but without the weather.

I have heard pros and cons about people moving from NY to NC (and other southern places).
I think you have 2 kinds of people who 'migrate.' First there are those people who want more than they have here. They want the bigger house and the bigger pool and know it is cheaper down South so they flock there. They bring their stupid materialistic attitudes (the one I cannot stand and why I want to get out of here) to the south. I have heard that many NYers live in little enclaves (communities) where they are totally surrounded by other NYers who have gone down south. (What's up with that?).
The other type of person is someone like myself or my husband who cannot make it here on our small salaries or compete with the "Joneses" so we just want to go somewhere we can afford the small house and a nice life for our child. I am not considering the south because I don't like the hot weather and I do not think I would be comfortable there.
Wherever I go, I will not be bringing the "Long Island" attitude.

You are exactly right. As someone who is a native NY'er and has lived & grew up in Queens, work in Manhattan and went to graduate school on Long Island (Hofstra University Zarb School of Business), I cannot agree more.
It has gotten worse over the years. People are extremely rude, agressive, hostile & extremely combative & confrontational. Plus, costs are so out of control for rent outside of Manhattan and other costs that it is nearly impossible to live on less than $100,000 or $125,000 a year for a single person.
Queens has gotten extremely crowded, congested, filthy, and rudeness is the rule often to the extreme.
You notice the difference once you leave the NYC metro area and don't have to worry about being practically punched in the face or followed home by some psycho in an SUV because you accidentely inadvertantly made eye contact with him.

I hope these types of NY'ers are staying put in NY. I can't stand these types.
Most of them my family Hopefully the ones moving will be the ones that want to get away from this.

In my area, thank goodness, they are the ones that are leaving! Sort of like when Fidel Castro opened the Cuban jails, and they all went to the US!
