Don't let other people's hang ups prevent you from moving wherever you want.
New York is a great place to live. If you want peace and quiet, you can live upstate. If you want hustle and bustle, you have NYC. Farm land, concrete jungle, or whatever else you're into, New York has it.
Good luck.

I've never been to AZ...... but New York is way better than North Carolina for me. Then again you and I are from two totally different New Yorks. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

You can live upstate but there's not much opportunity. I lived upstate and traveled to work in Mahwah and my dad traveled for years to Suffern. Back in the day if you worked at IBM you were lucky.
I also worked in NYC and had to live in North Bergen NJ, in a crap hole attic apartment I had to fix up myself and pay the landlord 1000,00 a month back in 1985.

I think you are doing the right thing in your case. It's pretty cool how you can go back to a town and live by your family. I think it's great that you guys get along great like that, that is priceless. A lot of us don't have with our families and I think that's why people get down on you sometimes. I think they are somewhat jealous. I really don't think it's about coming back to NY for you I think it's just part of who you are and where you are comfortable and that just happens to be NY.

Yeah, that's mostly it. I also do like MY new york better than NC and NYCW. I wouldn't really consider living anywhere in NYS south and east of Syracuse. I don't like New York state as a whole; I think it's run by morons from both parties who couldn't make a good decision for the majority if their life depended on it. I actually would be very glad if the Northern and western parts of NYS seceeded and formed a new state. When people ask me where I'm from down here, I never just say "new york". I either say "Upstate New York" (emphasis on the upstate), or Rochester.

Oh, so you really like upstate and would not consider anything south of that. I guess it's a whole different animal up there.

Definitely. NYS South of Binghamton really feels like a different state to me; that's where that Noo Yoak accent kicks in (a lot of people from other areas of the country don't realize that people upstate don't have that accent, they talk with the great lakes accent like people in Chicaaahgo). It's not "New York" that I like per say; it's just the community and family I left behind. I really do see many of the southern metros; especialy those in NC like Raleigh, being very similar to Long Island/Westchester/ North NJ soon though.

I don't even know who I am responding to, I just thought I'd add this:
1. My sister and her hubs lived in Charlotte and moved back to Western NY. They got tired of planning their activities around traffic.
2. My wife's best friend has lived in Charlotte for a year and she can't stand it. She wants to move back to the 'cuse.
