I am responding to several different posts. I have lived in NC for almost 13 years. My husband and I moved here from Buffalo. If I had to do it over again, I would have moved closer to Raleigh or Greensboro. We ended up in a very rural area, about 2 hours from any major city like Raleigh, Charlotte, or Greensboro. It is more difficult in the rural areas, as a "yankee" to find acceptance. I have some wonderful southern friends here, finally. But it takes time. I joined this site because my husband is ready to move back to the Buffalo area. How is the job situation in the suburbs of Buffalo like East Aurora, Hamburg, Orchard Park, etc.? Where would be a good place to live and make money. Also, would someone please give some information about salaries in the suburbs for teachers. Both my husband and I are 12 year teachers. He teaches English, I taught English for 12 years, but now I am currently working on a Masters in Library Science. I work as a Media Specialist in an elementary school. North Carolina teachers are state employees and their salaries are public knowledge, but it is very hard to find salary information for teachers in WNY as teachers are district paid. Any information about this would be appreciated.
Thanks,
MJ

I would also like to add that people I have known from New York who have moved to this area of NC have gone back as quickly as possible to New York. I have known 3 Buffalonians who have gone back because because of the poor economic development in this area. Raleigh is different . One would not feel the culture shock. You would have the benefit of living in a nice diverse city with great weather (most of the time). I did a very short stint in Raleigh (7 weeks) when I taught for a residential program for gifted students. Very, Very nice summer job!! However, I live in Eastjuhunga, NC. If you know what I mean. I read earlier posts about how in NC schools have trailers. That's where I live and teach. Yuck. Also, pay doesn't change for teachers as teachers are state paid. The cost of living is high in Raleigh and in areas just outside of Raleigh. So we would make about the same, and have much higher living costs. Teachers are not paid well in Raleigh and benefits are not great, they are typical.

Default Raleigh Metro NC then moved back to Long Island?

Hi everybody! We are originally from Long Island and moved to " Las Vegas " 10 years ago where we still are today. To make a long story short we are so ready to leave Vegas and would love to move somewhere back east closer to NY then we are now. Vegas is over 5 hours away on a plane, anyway Long Island became so pricey in the 10 years we left, we are considering a move to Raleigh NC.

So is there anybody here who is originally from Long island, moved to Raleigh NC only to move back to Long Island? If that did happen to you then why? Alot of people complain about Raleigh while others dont.

What is it about Raleigh thats so bad?

Thanks ---T

It isn't that Raleigh is "bad'....just EXTREMELY overrated. I've never lived on Long Island so I can't compare the two... but if you were happy in LI and are looking for LI living...move to LI. Raleigh will be just as expensive as LI in a few years, but without the same qualities that you actually liked about it.

Ok, now i'm stymied. I have been looking to move to NC (Hickory area) from central Florida along with my best friend from NJ. We were looking for somewhere to be closer to each other (we are both in 50's, no kids). On some of the other posts, everyone is delighted to be there, but this post sounds different. I see NC as slightly cooler than FL, warmer than NJ, more forested, more small towns. When we vacation there, everyone is so much more friendly than either FL or NJ. My biggest problem would be would I find a job. What's so bad about NC that I wouldn't want to come there. It's gotta beat Orlando any day.

Perhaps it is better than Orlando, again, I've never lived down there so I can't compare....my point is that Raleigh is overrated, not bad, and many people moving here are doing so under false pretenses that this is some great place where life is very easy and there aren't many problems....that's just not the truth.

I think you would like Hickory. Its located in Catawba county. Right at interstate 40 that runs east to west across the state. Medium sized city in the NC foothills. It is growing, but not uncontrolled growth like the Raleigh or Charlotte suburbs. Not overpriced either.
