So is it that bad in NC?
Wow are you guys serious? What am i missing here? Every city & state has the usual pro's & cons. But comapred to lets say Long Island whats so bad about North Carolina?
Isnt the cost of living much cheaper in NC? Home Prices? Better weather i guess, unless you like snow. Less traffic. Plenty of jobs in Raleigh.
I'm considering a move there so i would like to hear all the negatives, we are originally from Long Island, we have been in Las Vegas for 10 years and are now considering a move to Raleigh.
Thanks

We recently moved from Long Island to NC because my husband was not an attorney, healthcare professional, policeman, teacher, stockbroker or insurance salesman. Long Island is such a nice place to live in so many ways but the unions, utilities, NIMBYism, Anti-Business friendly townships along with our national movement into NAFTA and outsourcing has made it relatively impossible to continue our business which was a machine shop and an aggreagate construction mining company. There is really no room for certain types of industries and professions on Long Island. Especially if you want to work hard and do it legally.
North Carolina has been very difficult on my marriage and family. We consider moving back all the time. My children are not doing well in the schools and the lack of polish in their academic enviornment makes me crazy. I do believe that I am stuck here and will just have to make the best of things.

I would like to move to NC or SC also. We have visited and loved it we have many friends who love it because there stress is so reduced because of the cost of living is so much better. My husband is in healthcare and works 70 hours per week and it is still not enoungh. I pray and hope my house sells fast!

After looking at the boards from a few different states, it seems to me that the people who are most homesick are NYrs. When we live there we complain but when we leave it, we complain louder! I've been away long enough not to miss it anymore but our first move away from it was very tough.
It's good for NYrs to get outside of themselves for a bit. New York is a center-of-the-universe type place and we don't pay much attention to people from other places. We don't have to, half the world comes to us, lol. Anyway, there is life beyond NY but if the homesickness is too much, just give in and head home. The angst isn't worth it.

I've been reading these forums quite frequently as I had a brother up and move from upstate NY to Raleigh in a flat second last summer and they make it sound as though they have found Shang Gri La (sp) and then some so this particular thread is very informing. Personally, we have bets how long before he moves back. Poor guy can be an arrogant-mr-know-it-all (but I still love him) so I wonder how well he really is doing in the rebelish South!!!!! And those that have left and can't wait to return to Upstate (I'm in the Roch area), thanks.....you make a girl who is a bit wunderlusty look around here and realize "home" isn't all that bad apparently!!!!!! And now, as we approach another gorgeous spring/summer/fall, winter is just another memory that for the most part was non-existent this year.....never had snow until late January. Our winters are getting odder and odder......

We are retired and looking for a small town to "rest in"
Born in Queens,NY, lived there for 21 yrs, lived in Kailua, Hawaii for 25 yrs, lived in Denver, Colorado for 10 yrs, and in Sarasota, Florida 10 yrs....sooooooo, we are finally looking for a place like Hickory,NC to call our last nesting area.
Our kids are in Charlotte,NC ( Bank of America), and in Gastonia ( Police Dept ) and so NOT TO BE TOO CLOSE, we are thinking of Hickory, NC. Wife and daughter will be in Hickory at the end of APRIL 2007 to "look around".
We are also considering Matthews, NC...but that may be too close to the "babysitting" thingie........all I want is to work on a glof course , drink a little beer afterwards and make an idiot of myself doing Karaoke songs of the 50's.
Any comments are welcomed.........Tom

Old and been around the block.....lived in NYC (21 yrs), Hawaii ( 25 yrs ) Denver, Co (10 yrs) and now in Sarasota, Fl (10 yrs).....my next (final) stop is Hickory, NC....why? you may think?...because now is the time for me to rest from all the negativity that I have seen in my lifetime....the sterotyping, the name calling...etc....My goals are this.....find a little place to live, work part time on a golf course, drink a little beer, and make an idiot of myself, singing Karaoke. A handful of freinds is all I need, no matter what color, where they were born, what their IQ is, or even what state they came from...you see folks......the whining about the weather will never defer me from staying where I want to stay....because my few little friends will something to talk to me about, rather the the old people ailments that we all have !!!! I have noticed one thing in my 65 yrs, and that is this.....old folks have nothing to prove to each other....for some reason they seem to relax and let themselves be themselves. For example: I walked up to a black man, my age, and started to talk to him...we covered every base regarding the 1950's.....baseball, football, rock and roll, clothes, haircuts, even the way we use to walk ( the cool gait ), now do you think a young white guy and a young black guy today, would have that conversation ? That's why I say..old folks today, have sooooo much to talk about.....we don't have the time to judge a person by WHERE they are from, or their ACCENTS !.....we know only ONE THING we have in common, and that is LIVING during a certain era...and that my friends is precious to us. So whether you be a Yankee or a "good ole boy"...in time, you will have this era to talk about when us old folks are long gone......enjoy the moment. My IQ ??? who the hells knows?
