I like my odds in Raleigh over NYC any day. I was just in New York last week and there is a real sense of tension everywhere you go now. I wouldn't move back there in a million years. |

I have visited areas from the coast to the mountains. It is a beautiful state. From what I saw, the only areas with descent schools were the larger overcrowded areas. The more people that come, the worse they will get. As everyone says, people in the south don't want things to change. Some people who moving there say they are going to change things. Who's going to win? The people who stay where they are.

First of all, we didn't start this thread slamming North Carolina. You had a native of New York that had been in North Carolina do that. Secondly, I like North Carolina just like it is without Starbucks and what have you. (I don't drink coffee anyway). Thirdly I have never said one negative thing about New York in general for the simple fact I have never been to New York and probably never will. But I just think that it is ridiculous to come in here and tell people we have no medical services and that they would be better off with a witch doctor and that we are stupid and the like when a lot of us are educated and were educated right here in North Carolina. Personally if you want to move to North Carolina, I welcome you with open arms. But if the vast majority are going to be as miserable as it would seem that you are having lived there, then perhaps it isn't the place for you. I don't go to New York for the same reasons that most of you have affirmed here. |

For those of us leaving the state NC I would like to point out that many of the posters at this board are realtors and developers. They must try to defend NC in order to preserve their businesses. Experience speaks volumes and that is why we are leaving NC.

I think that you have hit the nail on the head. The ads here are sold to those whose livelyhood is impacted by negative comments in the neighborhood, it makes sense that these comments will be silenced, or challenged. I would certainly rise to defend my place of employment, or any negative comments about my line of work.
There are many things about North Carolina schools that need to be shared, as the climate is very different from New York, and people relocating absolutely have a right to know. Our topic got heated and locked. If anyone is interested in knowing what I am speaking of, PM or email me. It has to do with the way children are disciplined in our schools. Please do not open the topic up for discussion here, as the forum was locked way back. I am happy to provide factual data to anyone who is interested. It is interesting how emotional a topic can become, even one that is based on factual data. But, when factual data paints a negative picture of an area, emotions do get heated. A lot of people resent change or the threat of change to their everyday life. I do challenge the present way of thinking for a lot of my neighbors, and have taken the heat for that. It is fine with me, well worth the heat. Effecting positive change is slow and always controversial. I am sure that those who fought for women's rights, racial issues, etc, were thought to be wrong when they began to question the current way of doing things. Sorry to be vague, I hope that some of you will ask some questions. We do have to adher to the guidelines provided, and I do wish to comply with the rules of the forum. Best, Peggy |

Can someone lead me to the site where I can find factual data about each state's ranking in terms of literacy, average IQ, etc, as quoted in previous posts?
Thanks, Peggy |

Thanks Lakeman, I will take a look at that.
I will have to give you all the head's up when an article is published that will interest many of you. I was interviewed about NC schools, and some of the culture, and this article should be out soon. I will be specific when it is published, I don't want to jinx it by giving the name of the publication. |

Ultimately you are the ones who will educate your children, definitely not the schools alone and you aren't going to change 300 years of history. |

Peg, this is the site I was using, although I have my doubts about the methods used to obtain these figures. I think children of today are "smarter" than they were in my day or at least are doing things earlier than we were expected to do them. I didn't learn the multiplication tables until I was in the 4th grade and I was one of the first in my class to learn them. Brianna had then down pat in the first grade. So I guess the availability of education and the computers that we didn't have did create a difference in the educational upswings in all states.
