Poughkeepsie, NY (S. Hamilton St.)
Hello,
Just like to get some general information about Poughkeepsie, NY. In particular, the area of S. Hamilton Street. I like to know the following:
-Is it a nice, safe neighborhood?
-Is it diverse (racially and income mix)?
-Walking distance to transportation?
-Do a lot of people commute to NYC (Grand Central Terminal, Midtown, Downtown Manhattan) to work?
-Any shopping/stores (grocery, laundry mat, restaurants, parks) within walking distance?
Any information given is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It's one of the problem areas in the city. Stay away from Mansion St., Cherry St. Reservoir Square, Smith St. There's much nicer areas in Poughkeepsie than those areas. Yes, people commute to from the train station, but there are other areas to consider other that where you looking. The crime rate in those areas is high-something is always going on that it gets a mention in the local paper at least 2 times a month.
As to getting to a grocery from that area-either you have a car, take the Loop bus to a grocery store-from that area, you'd be better off on Rt. 9 near Marshall's plaza for shopping-just south of there. Along Rt. 9 there are apartment complexes that aren't too bad. Depends on how much you are looking to rent. If your buying a home-don't let a real estate agent kid you about parts of the city of Poughkeepse. We had one that tried to push us into moving in the city-but we grew up here and couldn't pay us enough to move there. Have you considered Wappingers Falls? There's plenty to walk to in the village-you'll still need a car/bus to get to the grocery store. And to get to the train station.
Honestly, the area is low income where your looking, until you hit parts of the south side where the old homes are-then you looking more upscale. Restored Victorians are in that area of Hooker- Raymond Ave.

CampingMom, thank you very much for your response. You've provided a lot of information and it is very helpful. I really appreciate it :-).
(I saw a very nice two-bedroom apartment on S. Hamilton St. for $1,300 and questioned the location.)
Zonababe, I live in the Midwood section of Brooklyn.

WOW! That's pricey for the location! . Check online at PoJoNews.com in the classified section for apartments. I hate to say, but they saw you coming when they quoted you that amount! Any other areas you've considered? I can try and give you ideas about them and information about the area. Also check Craigslist for available places.
On the far end of Hooker Ave. there is Fox Hill-they rent for $1300 for a 2 bedroom that's got lots amenities. Here's an example. It's a about 2 miles from the place you saw. It's in a nice area, diversity-college professors, young couples with kids, young professionals just starting out-and many different races for sure too. It's not far from the 44 Plaza where there's Walgreen's, Stop and Shop grocery, Vassar College-beautiful place to walk. Just to give you a idea of what you could get for the same money.

Can anyone tell me about Mill st, specifically 197 Mill st? Its Near the train, I'm looking at rentals in Poughkeepsie and looking at the price ranges, thats just one of them. Of course I will eventually take a train ride up there. But any relevant information will be great. Let me just say I don't care if the area is relatively low-income as long as it is relatively safe, and diversity would be great, from the stats it at leat seems like the city is diverse. Would I need a car in this area or could I survive without one? Does anyone not have a car?

That part of Poughkeepsie is pretty bad. It's run down and dangerous. Most of the area within a couple of blocks of 44/55 and Main Street are pretty bad areas to live in and not safe at all.
Are you looking to be close to the train? There are several apartment complexes on Rinaldi Blvd. that would put you in walking distance to the train station that are in a safer area and close to the stores on the safter parts of Main Street.
You absolutely need a car. There is no real grocery store within the city limits of Poughkeepsie and you can't count on the walkable stuff in the city to provide what you need. The recession has hit this area really hard...Main Street has many vacant, deteriorating store fronts and looks like Baghdad circa 2004. You definitely need to come up here and drive around the city for a bit and see if you're OK with living up here before signing a lease on anything.
