I agree, dont know how anyone makes it up here. But somehow it mysteriously just seems to work, though it does get tight very often.

When I was in the Charlotte metro, I ended up spending money on things I really didnt need. Like lots of retail and restaurants and getting back & forth to all them. After all, going to these places is like a "sport" and "entertainment". Back here, we just dont do that because we cant afford it all anymore. But we're happier and getting much more healthy because we walk and ride bikes and play in the many parks alot more. The air is not as humid so we are just "drawn" to the outdoors alot more. Our excercise leads to more endorphins and that leads to more stamina and that leads to encouragement and hope.

And, again, I dont know how its happening but we are actually further ahead financially and getting out of debt alot quicker than ever. I pay more for housing and the heating is alot more and I dont really earn that much more but I really think its a matter of priorities and lifestyle changes. It really can work if you want it bad enough.
Best wishes friend,

I live in New Jersey. I live near Rockland County NY which isn't "upstate", but I like to take drives to NYS, its so nice.

My uncle and aunt had a small mobile home in Delaware county, near the Catskills region. It was awesome in the fall (my favorite season). I love upstate New York. Delaware county had a very poor economy though...at least where they were. I would look elsewhere if I was looking upstate.

Hope you get back "home".

Good Luck

I think New Yorkers take a lot of rap for being rude. There are rude NY, there are rude people in NJ there are rude people MT.

My point is that there are good and bad people everywhere.

If someone bad mouth people from New Yorker New Jersey or the north east....doesn't that make them rude?!

A lot of NYers have had family here for generations. Luckily for us, our house has been in the family so we got a great deal on it.

I think this is a really interesting thread. It's timely for my husband and myself because we were recently talking about moving to NC. We finally decided that it just is not for us. I love this area and long hot summers bother me a lot more than our winters. In 1989 we moved to FL - we moved back to NY 8 months later, and I was so happy to be back.

Otherwise I have no real complaints as of yet other than the same you'd have with any move - making new friends, finding your way around, figuring out where the good eats are.

For me specifically the move has been GREAT for my three small kids. Our old neighborhood was full of people we never met or saw. Nobody spent much time outdoors to meet them. Our new neighborhood has almost a dozen kids to play with and they're all outside running around constantly. It's like night and day. I've met more of my neighbors in 1 month in NC than I did living 8 years in NY in my old neighborhood.

It's a shame NY is so damn expensive. Add the insulting 6 months of dismal Rochester winter and I was more than happy to adventure to a different location in the US.

Will I remain this happy about my decision in 12 months or 12 years? Only time will tell.

Thank you for adding some balance to this "pile-on-of-a-thread". People move for all different reasons. Then when they find out that their new location is not exactly like the one they came from, they feel they need to slam the area for not living up to their expectations. I think alot of people do not properly research the area and later regret their decision. I hope to be going to NC in a few months. I know it will be an entirely different world, but life is a journey.... life's about changing.... home is where you hang your hat..... yada freakin yada, wish me luck

No, I do not miss NY anymore. After the military, I moved away, across the Atlantic as a matter of fact, for years. During those years I sometimes missed NY badly: upstate, where I grew up, the City, where I had a lot of great times. IŽll never forget this place in LI called Hammer Heads, where I saw this band called Zebra and then slept on the beach with my friends. I grew up in NY in the 70s, and it was a different world. 911 called me home. It made me realize how powerful the connection still was, but the illusion that I had that NY and the USA would finally, really pull together burst real fast. I left a few years later, for good. I will never understand how a once proud and fearless people...the mighty New Yorkers could let their State be taken over and drastically changed by a bunch of woosy wanna-be socialists like Hillary Clinton and her liberal ilk. In the 70s, contrary to popular belief, people saw through that political crap like nothing and were true individuals. In those days a man was a man, and in NY, if you messed with someone, you had better be packinŽa lunch, because you were lookinŽ at gettin your arse whipped if you couldnŽt walk the walk. Now, in The Empire State, if you even look at somebody funny...on the street, at work, in school, all some idiot has to do is whip out a cell phone and make an anonymous phone call stating that someoneŽs feelings got hurt and you got the full force of the NYS govt. on your butt, putting your life, your wife and kidŽs lives under a microscope to see if youŽre dangerous (i.e. not an immasculated male). How much does that cost? I could not believe that New York let itself become a virtual Orwellian police state the way it did, and it almost broke my heart to see how millions of gullible people were duped into it by a small click of rich social engineers and their middle-class lackeys. But who knows...maybe some day the North will rise again!

Yes I miss it! I am from Rochester (Greece). I now live in Las Vegas and wish I never left! Greece was great. The people, food entertainment I miss it all. Las Vegas isn't for me or my husband. I would move back to Greece right now if my husband would go.

I just moved from Rochester, NY as well. I'm now in Virginia, and I think that the people are friendly and the weather is great. So far, my wife and I are loving the city. The economy is fantastic and the downtown has much much more hustle and bustle. It's nice to be somewhere where people are excited to be. I felt that everyone was always complaining about the weather and the fact that there was nothing to do back home.

I certainly miss my family and friends, but we'll make new friends over time (plus keeping in touch with the old!). Plus, my family is getting older and starting to move around anyway. You have to do what you want to do/try in life to stay happy. I just couldn't take the taxes and the six months of terrible weather (snow snow snow). Good luck to all, and just remember, you make your own happiness. If you convince yourself that the old days were better than today, then you're bound to be unhappy!
