When I lived in Binghamton, I was miserable. Then I moved to Orlando and realized how good Binghamton actually was, as scary as that sounds. While over the last 5 years I've lived in Tallahassee (one of the few parts of Florida worth living in for a upstater) the opportunity to come home and live in Rochester was too good to turn down, especially at a liveable salary. So, in a couple of weeks I'm moving back to upstate.

That's an interesting post - Binghamton is better than Orlando! It would appear that Binghamton has next to nothing going for it, while Orlando is growing and has glitz and glamour.

But I have heard from MANY people that most of Florida is a real drag, and that despite its shortcomings (mostly economic), upstate New York is a much better place to live.

What industry do you work in?

I would really like to move back to Rochester for a million different reasons. I was there for the weekend and I literally cried when I came back to Florida. I miss Rochester so much.

At this point I'd be willing to try any career to make it work. The problem is that both my wife and I have decent jobs in Florida, each making 2x what we were in Rochester.

As my mom would remind me..."your money or your life" - just something to think about..life is very short. If you lived on your previous salary before, perhaps you can again?

Default Yes!

I totally miss living in the Buffalo area. I can't wait to get back. I'm almost willing to buy a house and then look for a job.

Believe it or not, I work as a city planner... As much as I like Tallahassee, I had to get back home ( for about the same money after taxes and benefits are factored in). If I didn't do it now, I never would.

Well, If you have money, Orlando isn't too bad. If not, you spend too much time in your car, perpetually scrambling to pay bills, working in jobs that with a bachelors degree you are hideously overqualified for, etc. Leaving for Tallahassee and going back to school was the best decision I ever made. While Binghamton, while a sh!*^&le, is one with a tremendous amount of character, while Orlando is as plastic and temporary as most of the stripmalls.

Smile Hope It's Better Now

Which helps me to know I am not insane!

I miss home and since my husband and I have good jobs, he doesn't want to leave even though we are alone here. All I get from southerner's is I better behave the way they expect or you won't fit in. I am so tired. Even being the friendly person I have always been (NY'er or not) if I slip with one word or an incorrect response, I am done with what they feel towards me. I have been informed that I am a guest in NC until they deem it fit to accept me, and I should never consider myself a NY'er living in North Carolina. I should be striving to be a North Carolinian. (sp?) I'm almost crying now.

We moved from Fulton, NY which is up by Oswego, and I miss it. I grew up in Seneca Falls. I miss snow, could care less about how taxes now.

Thank you for listening--sorry to bend your ear--I guess it was just a real bad day in the "south".
I felt so badly for you-I just read your note-I'm from Rochester and moved to FL many years ago. I've never experienced what you have, but that's because South Florida is not the south-just transplanted Northerners. I sure hope things are going better for you now.

It is my hometown and I will go back someday to raise my family.

Your comment on the comparison between Akron, Cleveland, and Buffalo in your own words are "absolutely ridiculous". The data above shows a different story than you paint. I think the facts speak for themselves. The truth is they are all rust belt cities that are very similar to crime, poverty, and income. Matter of fact I could suggest Akron maybe doing better than Cleveland and Buffalo in all areas.

Other than the proximity to places like Western MA, Vermont and New Hampshire, there's absolutely nothing I can say we miss. Everything has been better for us since we left.
