most beautiful place to retire
my husband wants to retire and move to a beautiful scenic place. We are from las vegas and want to experience the east. Many people tell us that vermont and newhampshire are the most beautiful but we ran into someone who said not to overlook parts of upstate new york. He said that upstate has some of the most brreathtaking areas in the us. Please enlighten us. We want to be settled by august.

Whoever said that is correct. You might like communities like Cooperstown, Ithaca, Hamilton, Cazenovia or Skaneateles, among many others.

Don't you have any more
specifications than that???? Not meant to sound harsh, but don't you need more info than just if the place is gorgeous? Do you care if the retirement place is/isn't near certain things...........like airports, colleges, golfing, nearness to a city if you want to do other things when people visit/whatever (museums, plays, music, etc.....). I think most of New Hampshire, Vermont, and upstate NY (and Maine) qualifies as beautiful, but there is a vast difference even within specific areas of each state.......depending on what else is important to you both.

I think that being fairly nearby to a hospital would be nice. We would like a safe place with a real small town feel, a real sense of community. Thw town must have a movie theater and a grocery store. We are in our fifties and enjoy hiking and bike riding. We do not golf but would love something near water. But most importantly, we want 4 seasons and postcard beauty.

I would look up Chautauqua County. The Chautauqua lake is really beautiful, and the are has all that you are looking for. The institute has amazing lectures and is very well known. I would check out a few websites for it. Good luck!

The 1000 Islands are very nice. Right on the St. Lawrence Seaway and you have proximity to Syracuse, the Adirondaks and Canada. Definetely worth at least a visit.

There is a great hospital here and it's
a college town with plenty of opportunities to hear lectures, music, theatre or volunteer if you decide to. I would think you might be fairly active if you are only in your fifties.......There are lots of transplants and people are friendly since it was formerly an Air Force Community. We are on the water and there are plenty of places to sail, hike, canoe and drive a few miles and you are in either Canada, Vermont, or Lake Placid activities.......Lots of history and cultural activities to fill each season......nice mountain/valley views a bit north and west of city.....Saranac area, Beekmantown area.......roads are called French Settlement Road, and there is Summit Drive in Peru and others (Burnt Hill Road) in Saranac..........Lots of apple orchards, cornfields, ADK mountains and lakes and streams and also good trout/fly fishing if you happen to want to learn......People do seem to value the environment quite a bit up here.

when i checked out the upstate area for a retirement town i found the lovely town of watkins glen! now, it's perfect for me because it's affordable, is located on a beautiful lake, is located in the southern tier so maybe the winters won't be too bad , has some tourism with the wineries and the race track and the natural beauty is well gorgeous i might say but, i don't know if there is a movie theater there....i hope there is!
