Default Salisbury Mills -> Manhattan commute.. realistic?

My relatives have a house in Salisbury Mills and they're offering to let me stay temporarily if I find a job in NYC. I'll be bringing my car but will probably use it to get to a convenient Park and Ride station to switch to public transportation to enter NYC. Would that be a realistic commute option (for about a month or so until I find an apartment in Manhattan)?

Maybe for a very short period of time.I think the commute would be between 1.5 and 2 hrs each way.I guess people do it but I couldn't .

The average one way commute from the Salisbury Mills/Cornwall station to Penn Station/NY is about 94 minutes (could be well over 3 hours round trip if you catch the local train), and the monthly pass is about $300. These estimates doesn't include subway or bus fares within Manhattan to get to your job, and if your job is on the Upper East Side, for instance, it could easily take you another 30-40 minutes in Manhattan alone. The Port Jervis line can often be very crowded and tends to be standing room only around holidays. I think it would be very tiring for you, honestly. My advice is to find a temporary room share or efficiency apartment in Manhattan or one of the boroughs while you're looking for a permanent place (try craigslist!)... even Jersey City or Hoboken would be a gigantic improvement on Salisbury Mills. Good luck!

I know someone who drives to Peekskill or Garrison and takes the train from there. She says it's not bad.

I think you could handle it for a short time. Just expect a long commute. You may want to consider what doghead said and drive over to Garrison. For more info on the trains go to
MTA Metro-North

Good luck.

I rode the train from Salisbury Mills/Cornwall for about 15 years and never minded it. For most of the years, I worked in the East Side of Mid-town - Third Ave in the mid-40's. Actually, walking distance to Grand Central Station. Other years I worked in the vicinity of the World Trade Center (until 9/11, that is) and also on the West Side in the Thirties.

I'd get the train from Salisbury Mills, ending in Hoboken. Transfer to the PATH to 33rd and walk to Third & 42nd. (Never needed a gym membership in those days! )

The bus is another option, though I find the quality of ride on a train is so much better then bumping around in traffic on a bus. Just my opinion; lots of folks take the bus from Orange County to NYC on a daily basis.

And tons of folks commute by train from here. Given that I worked so close to Grand Central Station, I did try commuting from Beacon. While it was great to get off the train and be just a block to my office, I found that I didn't enjoy getting off the train and still have to drive 15 miles. While the trip can seem long when taking the train from Orange County, it's sure nice to get off in Salisbury Mills and be within a couple of miles of home.

So do not hesitate - come on up and try commuting from here. Sure, it will be an adjustment. But it's a senic ride and once you get into the rhythm of if, you'll find there's lots of friendly folks on those rails.
