I live near Utica. The area is getting worse. Even though they just announced the addition of new private sector jobs, they are all call center positions, very low pay. Stores are going out of business, the abandoned factories on 5S deteriorate more and more, and nothing is done. It is a very depressing area.

But the old Charlestown is getting a make over right? At least that's what they've been trying to do for the past 30 years! It's just amazing what that city can't accomplish.
Last I heard they were trying to find a buyer for Charlestown. But, there's been nothing about it in several months.
They need to knock it down and forget about it. It's a great spot to have some kind of business there being it's on the 5s mainline, but the politicians ruin the chances of getting more businesses to Utica.

It was bought by a Utica area attorney named Mike Cancilla. His plans have for development been in the Utica area media quite a bit lately. A number of the buildings willl be knocked down and the salvageable sections will be turned into loft style units and some turned into assisted living units for the elderly; retail on the lower levels, etc. A development group from Mass is involved as well. I know Mike from my youth football days and I hope he can make it work, but quite honestly I can't see the numbers adding up when you take into account the cost for lead abatement and everything else that will be necessary to make the place liveable.
