A town, city, village, whatever, somewhere near mountains that has no crime, where being "green" doesn't mean driving the SUV to whole foods and maybe using a reusable bag if you remembered it, but walking or riding your bike if it's feasible or better yet hitting up the local market. Somewhere that people know compost doesn't actually stink and are happier to compost since it means great fertilizer for their garden? Or does this all equate to rural "middle of no where"? Where you mind your own business and people mind theirs, etc.

I don't think utopia exists in the communal sense. People keep messing it up.
I think that you can live the way you want to and will naturally find people of similar ilk.
What you can do with relative ease is find small towns near mountains with low crime rates. That would be where I'd start.
