Hi there - my girlfriend and I are looking to move to the US next year. I will be working for my existing employer in Ireland trying to establish a market for our services in the US. I will be working mainly on the East Coast and will be working from home / on the road so where I am based is sort of up to me.
Just looking for some help on where in the tri-state area would you base yourself and why if this was the constraints you were working with:
- near an airport - must be near JFK or Newark (within 60 min drive or commute, even less would be good)
- near enough to NYC - should be within 60-90 mins or so of NYC, a lot of my potential customers will be based around here
- other stuff - should be safe, and nice place to live. Must be some activities and not too small an area
- cost of living - we're looking for a 2bed aprt for < $1500 a month too in a decent area
- night life / socialising - we're not too into clubs, but there should be some pubs, restaurants and also as we're both going to be brand new to america places to socialise to meet other like minded people!
If you were us and could pick - where would you base yourself in this tri-state area and why?
wow gcom, 60 minutes to a NYC/Newark airport? That doesn't leave you much leeway. That pretty much limits you to northern NJ;
Westchester County, NY; the southern/coastal end of CT; and some of the Oranges.
If you can afford those places, no problem - it covers everything you are looking for. Can you plan on going over $1500/month rent? That's where it gets sticky. My niece had a real nice rental in New City, a carriage house over garage that was part of a larger home. That was 6 years ago @ $1250/month. Took a LOT of searching to find that. She moved to Woodbridge, NJ and found a great apt. in a complex for $1625/month. Now she's decided to look again in the New City area as well as Pearl River, Rye, & Nyack. Can't touch anything there for less than 2G - & those are small rentals! (I should add that we did look at some around 1240-1450/month, but not to her "liking"...)
when i look into it Syracuse and Albany are both about 3-4 hours from Boston or New York though driving time. In neither case is this near the airports or industries I mentioned, am i missing something?
Dutchess County would be the end point for you going north. And I'm talking about southern Dutchess County in order to put you into NYC in 90 minutes by Metro North. You can find rentals in your price range there, but any farther north would not be a feasible commute.
