Hello,
I used to live in Utica in 2001 for a short time and took a temp job in which I commuted to Little Falls every day to work a production line. You probly remember the plant (since closed in '06) as it provided many jobs. I believe it was Del Labs but cant remember the location of the building, do you?
I ended up living in Little Falls for a few months. I came from a big city, (I dont mean Utica) so there was a certain charm in Little Falls that was distinctly personal to me alone, thanks to what I experienced firsthand. I guess others who pass through would need to shape their own personal charms about it. Some posters on this board say there is nothing special about this place, but the feeling is different for everyone.
It has a lot to do with where I lived. It was on Ann St. @ Canal Place. I shared an upstairs hardwood floor apartment in a red brick building that overlooked a bridge below. My view every day was the water rushing along the Erie Canal and the changing color of Autumn leaves as a backdrop. Across the street were the Canal Shops featuring art, and directly below me was Canal Side Inn.
Little Falls is the kind of place people don't know about. When someone says they want to move there, I can understand why. It might be unique in the sense that the town sits on some rolling hills and some parts of it, like roads and buildings, are higher than other parts. That's gotta be it. That's gotta be why folks say it leaves an impression. Being the gateway to the Adirondacks, to have a river run through it is only fitting.
The area, including Herkimer County is rich with history since the 1800's. Little Falls is famous for starting the cheese trade, after being known as the busiest producer for the U.S. in 1869. Many other trades began in the early 1900's. Some businesses handed down through generation, the kind where, if you live in this town you will know their name. I would say that Little Falls is a family-oriented place, ideal to raise kids, or relax, as long as you bring a comfortable cushion with you, as the job market has already been spoken for by most of its residents.
Main Street looks like an event is in town.
