catherine387 is on a distinguished road
Default Fort Drum area...

My husband is about to reenlist and I'm trying to figure out which posts he should look into. I'm really interested in Fort Drum and would love more information about the surrounding areas. We're in Fort Campbell, KY now and our hometown in Virginia Beach, VA.

Are there many good shopping areas/malls?
How far away is restaurants/shopping areas?
Crime rate?
Housing areas (on and off post).

Are there any fabric shops? (I'm a fabric junkie and I sew ALOT!)

As a former Ft. Drum soldier, I will say this:

Salmon Run Mall is the only mall in the Watertown/Ft. Drum area. Many people go to the malls in the Syracuse area on the weekends too. Syracuse is about an hour away. So, making that trip is not bad.

Arsenal Street has improved greatly since I ETSed in May of 2003. That is the area where most of the shopping is located in the area, with some exceptions in the downtowns of the major communities.

As far as crime, there is hardly any serious crime in the Watertown area. It's definitely a family friendly area.

As far as I remember, the off post housing that is government owned is in Calcium, Evans Mills, Carthage, West Carthage, Clayton, Watertown, Gouverneur, Copenhagen, Lowville and Philadelphia. There are quite a few on post developments and I know that about 2 thirds of them are in the Indian River School District and the other third is in the Carthage School District.

As for fabric shops, the one I know about is Jo-Ann Fabrics in Watertown and it is a good store. I believe there is one in Carthage too.
