iloveupstateny is on a distinguished road
I am sorry, but these are terrible number reports. Yes, there is some growth, but not enough to really write home about. Upstate NY is so wonderful, but it is so damn depressing. Everyone I meet loves it, but has to leave for work. I am growing very sick of it along with its taxes. Why am I killing myself to get back there when I can have a better life somewhere else?

I agree with you on taxes. But why so depressing? Outside of Erie county the numbers are not all that bad. Monroe county was pretty much zero, which is fine by me because that means we are not in some sort of a bubble. Albany is growing. So that really leaves Onondaga and Erie. Erie county has a tremendous amount to recover from, a small amount of research into Buffalo's history will show you why the city rose to one of the largest in the country, just to have it's locational advantages cut off. But Buffalo is turning itself around and has shown that in recent years, just look at the building projects going on.

I would rather have a small or steady population growth than to have hordes of people coming in from everywhere. Upstate NY has taken on its own culture, and its not depressing, it what you make of it. Upstate has some of the best waterways in the country. We have some of the best festivals, Lilac, Italian, International Music, Polish Festival, Taste Of Syracuse and Canal Fest just to name a few. Theres Niagara Falls, the food, the museums, performing arts centers, universities, sports, skiing and even Nascar. You name it we probably have it.

I think the burbs around Schenctady (Glenville, Niskayuna, Rotterdam...) are what's growing the most. This is probably impacted by GE hiring again. However, Schenectady itself is still in a funk. I work there and when you talk to the locals, they still don't have much good to say about their city. In fact, they think it's headed downhill again.

Actually, I believe the city's population has held steady since 2000. Schenectady, New York - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I feel like Schenectady County is growing, but the city itself is starting to over-flow. :[

Jefferson County is growing because of Fort Drum (Watertown). Outside of Tompkins county (Ithaca), I cant imagine anything west of Syracuse growing.

One thing you dont have....j-o-b-s. Thats why people are still leaving. Outside of organic farming and tourism, and some residual defense spending....what else is rapidly growing up there?

Price Chopper is actually moving its headquarters downtown. I'd imagine a couple hundred people work there (actually, my dad works at the current one.) NYSDOT's regional offices are also there. Plus GE just announced that they're developing batteries for hybrid cars in the area, and I'd imagine that would be either in Schenectady or maybe Saratoga county. So it could get better for Schenectady the city.

I figured the growth was suburban, but I just never think of the Schenectady suburbs as like the hip suburbs, the Northway suburbs where all the soccer moms live.
