Not sure about the place, but Carthage is a nice area along with West Carthage. It's not too far from Fort Drum and to get to Alex Bay, you would probably have to take Route 3 to Route 342 to I-81 to get there.

The Alexandria Bay area is exceptional in summer. The only reason I suggested the other was your initial preference for urban life. If you're a water person there's nothing better than the 1000 Islands though.
What you are going to run into is the lack of housing in the Watertown and surrounding areas because of the Ft. Drum base expansion. There is also a significant seasonal population along the riverfront communities which places may be vacant off-season. Kingston, in the provence of Ontario (one of my favoirte cities and with a couple of universities) isn't a bad suggestion as is it's closer town Gananoque right over the bridge. The Canadian side is more highly developed and more sophisticated in it's offerings but still quite peaceful. You would be able to commute by boat within a few minutes from Brockville (Ontario), a not unheard of practice in the area, though not possible in the dead of winter. There is an apt complex in ABay within walking distance to the downtown and near the golf course whose name I do not know. You should check with the Chamber of Commerce.

This is a very true statement. Kingston, Brockville, Ganonque and even Cornwall are more cultured and sophisticated places than Watertown, A-bay, O-burg and Massena.

Considering that Kingston is the biggest city out of all them and Brockville and Cornwall are bigger than Watertown, it is no surprise there.

Brockville and Cornwall are hardly the shangri la....Cornwall is a dump and Brockville has a small downtown, but there isnt much there. Watertown is a dead city (beautiful park and zoo though)...and Ogdensburg and Massena are even deader. I'm a summer resident up in that area, and spent my college years up there....any questions private e-mail me.
