I would never live there, but I believe Nassau and Suffolk counties have the lowest crime rates in the US.

There plenty of places with low crime rates. I know suburban towns like Clay, Colonie, Amherst and Greece are some of the safest places in the country.

You need to specify where you're inquiring about. Do you mean New York State, or New York City and it's five boroughs, and/or including NYC's surrounding burbs?

You may want to take advantage of the main purpose of this site. Citydata offers complete breakdowns of all relevant (and sometimes not so relevant) statistics for any town worth mentioning. It has very detailed information on crime, with comparisons to statistical averages. Give it a try.

Safest in the five boroughs, probably Staten Island. Safest in the state, take your pick, it's wide open. Probably somewhere up in the Adirondacks.

Staten Island only has a half a million people here, that is why crimes are "lower". There have been more homicides here than any other borough. Look it up on the NYPDs site guys. And the island has a huge prescription drug problem.
