Relocating to Auburn, NY
Hello Everyone!
I am going to be relocating to Auburn, NY in the coming weeks from Williamsburg, VA. Although I have lived in NY in the past, I don't know anything about the greater Syracuse area. My girlfriend and I are very active people and enjoy close access to shopping, entertainment, nightlife, and restaurants. Are there any surrounding neighborhoods near Auburn, NY that fit the bill?
Any and all information would help me greatly. Thank you!

I am from Auburn.... Although slightly better than when I moved away (college), there is not much to do at all. I'm sorry! Skaneateles is relatively close and has nice restaurants on the water, some cute shops. Cost of housing is high. The mall in Auburn is horrible, at best. You will likely shop at Carousel Mall in Syracuse (about 45 minute drive).

Auburn isn't big enough to have neighborhoods like that. Likely you will go to Skaneateles for shops and dining about 12 miles away. There is a large discount mall off the thruway near Seneca Falls.

I was going to say that the Waterloo Outlet Mall might be another option for shopping as well. Fingerlakes Mall has some decent stores, you will most likely go to the Syracuse area for the bulk of your shopping, depending on what you like to get.
Auburn has some nice homes for very affordable prices. It's a walkable city with some nightlife in it's Downtown, but it is a city of about 30,000 people. So, it is limited in that respect.
Some other options for nightlife are: Skaneateles, Syracuse, Ithaca and maybe even Rochester, among others. All are at the most within an hour from Auburn.

I'm originally from Auburn, and visited there in '07. It seemed very quiet to me, except for some traffic on the Loop thing that takes you away from the downtown to the mall, Wal-Mart, Bass Pro shop, etc. It has also been an economically depressed town for quiet some time, but it sounds like you already have a job there, so that might not concern you. If you wanted a younger, more arty/liberal area with a lot to do, you might want to check out Ithaca and its surrounding towns and villages. You'd have to commute at least a half hour or more, but it might be more to your liking.

Thanks to everyone for the informative replies, you have helped me immensely. I definitely want to live to the east of Auburn, closer to Syracuse. Does anyone have any information on Camillus? The houses look affordable there and its kinda of midway between Auburn and 'cuse.

Camillus is a Western suburb of Syracuse that has it's share of shopping and is a nice area. I think the most affordable housing is in the village of Camillus and Fairmount(cdp). West Genesee School District serves the town and is very good as well. Here's some information on the town: Town Of Camillus, New York. Phone: (315) 488-1335

Another community or area to consider is the Baldwinsville area too: http://www.baldwinsville.org/

Good decision!
A photo thread of Camillus that could be of some help:

DnSteele, the reason why I moved this thread out of the Syracuse forum was because Auburn is JUST outside what I consider the "Syracuse area"....which is all of Onondaga County, western Madison County and southern Oswego County. If I-690 connected Auburn with Syracuse, I'd probably start lumping Auburn with Syracuse. But as of right now, Auburn is not connected enough to Syracuse and its suburbs to place under the Syracuse forum. Just hope it didn't cause you too much trouble!
