Default Places to live near Oneonta?

We are considering a new job offer for my husband which would have him on a route of Owego to Palatine Bridge. We don't know anything about the area but from looking at a map it seems like Oneonta would be kind of in the center of this route? We currently live in Putnam County with 3 acres of property backed by woods. We love where we are living and the fact that we are close to everything, any store we could want within 15 minutes....etc. We'd like to take a drive up there to check out some areas to live before making this decision. I have 2 sons, a 3 year old and a 6 week old and need a good school district, great place to raise kids, property but still be close to stores and would like to be on the side closer to Dutchess. Which is where my parents live.

I know this is a lot of criteria but I could really use some input on the surrounding areas and advice as to where to look.

Thank you!!

I have family in Sidney. Its small and great for families, but its not exciting and fast paced by any stretch. It has a fantastic school system - probably one of the best in that area. I used to work with a woman who lived in Afton where her husband teaches. They sent their kids to Sidney for school. I don't know if that says more about Afton than it does about Sidney, though!

Shopping is another thing.... I think there is a (Super) Kmart. A small downtown offers a few amenities. Oneonta is 30 minutes away and Binghamton is 45.

The I-88 corridor is just a not a retail hotpsot. There really isn't much shopping between Binghamton and Albany. Oneonta has a nice downtown with practical, but limited, shopping and a small "mall" with even more limited shopping. But I don't think you'll find any of the major retailers outside of Walmart, JCPenney, and probably a Lowes/Home Depot.

Land and property would be fairly cheap thoughout the area.

You may want to think about moving closer to Schnectady. It gives you the access to shopping & services, and access to the Hudson Valley for family. Bingo/Owego is 2-1/2 hours away, but the northern part of your husbands route is right there.

Thank you so much!! Really I am open to any suggestions. Being closer to family would be nice but the reality is we have to live and commute there much more then we will be seeing family so that really is the most important thing. If that means a little extra time in the car when we do go to visit itll be worth it.

Ill do my research on the recomendations above and plan on making a trip up there to look around soon too.

Can't forget about communities like Otego or Unadilla, which form the Unatego School District too. It is located right in between Oneonta and Sidney on I-88.

All of these are good ideas.

Cooperstown would be really nice - good schools, but still reliant on Oneonta for most shopping and services. Its a little off the beaten path if access to the interstate and points east & west are important (it's probably 20 minutes to I-88). Chenango Forks/Chenango Bridge is not a bad choice. I don't know anything about their schools, but is close to Bingo.

Cobleskill, hmmm, I actually know a teacher in the Cobleskill school district, but I doubt I would get the straight & honest scoop from her. It has a small college so there would be a few more choices for eating and shopping & Schenectady is about a half hour away. Of the three places you mentioned, I think Cobleskill is the most interesting.

I'd still go with Sidney over Unatego schools if I had the choice. The nice thing about Unadilla and Otego is that the villages are pretty. But move outside the village and it looks exactly the same as just about anywhere in the Susquehanna Valley. It sounds like the OP would like some acreage, so I would choose the acreage that puts me in the better school district. If quiet village life is what the OP would like, then Unadilla would be a wonderful choice.

Yeah, I was thinking if it was me, I would go with Sidney or Oneonta, to be honest.
