Question Wingdale, NY - Bad Decision?

Hello,

I am considering moving to Wingdale, NY with my family (5) 2 children over 18 and one age 11. I've decided to move for my Daughter and better schooling.

My Wife plans to relocate work and work either in New Milford, CT or Wappingers Falls, NY - she's in the medical field. One of my children still has to commute to NYC for school. The eldest child will be looking for work. She may get a car so that she can commute conveniently. I'm in the Bronx now and working in Westchester County - I'm aware and OK with the commute.

Looking at the area from Google's eye - it doesnt seem too convenient to anything. Of course Google may not be seeing everything that a local may know of.

Is there more to the area than just driving an hour to everything or is Wingdale's location just as it looks?

I'm familiar with Wappingers Falls, NY and would hope that Wingdale has a "lively" strip.

Any feedback is appreciated!

Sorry, it's just as it looks. If I were you, I'd take a Sunday drive up there and take a look. You might prefer Pawling. The distance between New Milford, CT and Wappingers Falls is over an hour. Wingdale is fairly isolated but they do have train service.

I guess I chose the wrong words - but you cant edit posts here

Yes I'm aware of the isolation - I drove up over the weekend and figured this out. But I also learned that New Milford, Danbury and Wappingers Falls - either or are less than an hour away. I drove to each

The Wife was happy with the home, not too thrilled with Danbury (no particular reason), but loved Wappingers Falls due to the SUPER Walmart which sold FOOD. The other Walmarts DID NOT sell food, produce, meats etc. We did not check the local markets in Wingdale, like A&P or Hannafords, but we know at least it's local for quick pick up.

We're on a 1 year rental - so if we dont like it - we can just move out. We're kind of use to the isolation already. I was more curious if what we saw is what we get - we found out it is .. Not a problem for us.

Thanks Bevg!

Not a choice for the locals. There are much prettier areas on of south dutchess that are commutable by train. Pawling is along the same Metro North line and has a cute walkable downtown. You will find plenty of food shopping and restaurants (super a/p and hannaford(kind of like a trader joes)....Danbury offers the mall..but you can also find your shopping needs can be satisfied along the 684/84 shopping center near metro norths southeast line (kohls, home depot, etc etc etc).

But if you like it..then that is all that matters! :-)

Yep I guess we'll have to buck in and see how it all works out. Pawling is only 15 minutes from Wingdale so it's not so bad.

I passed through Oniontown today, on Route 22, and didn't notice anything unusual there. I don't drive down any side streets as I pass through, but the town must be really small.

Slowly they are chipping away at that infrastructure.. No one likes the view from 22 and the grounds should certainly be used for a small town shopping street like area, we need it desperately. Similar to what Pawling and Dover Plains have. Let's hope the Dover Knolls project doesn't just fade away. As it seems right now they are dragging their feet - taking down a building at a time and re-modeling others.. Also understand though that about 10 years ago was when Dover Knolls was ready full speed ahead to design the small town within the town they had major push-back from the locals.. It's not only until recently a change in the town board that they've been able to overcome the denial to move forward. Now what residents will move up north with this difficult economy? It's no wonder the Dover Knolls project is very very slow moving.. They say 2-8 years before any real "building or development" will happen.. Not sure we'll be here that long.. Otherwise, I don't mind Wingdale itself for the home it provides, the schools and the peace

If you are looking for convenience, Wingdale is not it. We do have many places on the mountains that are beautiful. The Town of Kent, Ct is not far and has enjoyable shopping and ssome nice eating. New Milford, CT is developing as a shopping area, and further down the road, is Brookfield. If you are looking for discount food, there is Costco in Brookfield.
On Rte 22 there is Hannafords in Pawling and A&P in Patterson as well as Freshtown in Dover and Amenia
There is a wonderful farmers market in Amenia that goes on all winter and several others that are summer only outside. We have wonderful produce as well as meat and dairy. All of it is healthy and local. You can talk to the actual farmers. We may be short on big impersonal chain stores, but there are plenty of small independent stores.
Dover Knolls has to get more approvals from the state before continuing.
