Are you looking to move there? Call the chamber there, I used to work for them (dcrcoc.org). They have a relocation package they can send you. 845-454-1700. Both areas are very different.

Poughkeepsie has alot of different areas. In what I mean, you could go near Marist College and find some great housing. Or go by Vassar, which is the town of Poughkeepsie and find housing. Each area is very different, although not far from each other. The main street of Poughkeepsie has gone through some major changes in the past few years...for the positive. The city and the chamber is trying hard to revitalize that area and it has changed significantly. Another area, not bad is lower Main Street towards the Hudson River. Little apartments and relatively safe. Safe meaning that because it's a city you wouldn't want to walk around very late at night by yourself. Day time, its very safe. The city center has many little businesses, including its post office, county offices and the Civic Center. This brings a ton of people that work downtown during the day. Its the evening, when everyone goes home and basically many businesses close up. But with some of the revitalization on Main Street, some of the restaurants are staying open and that brings people downtown. There is a strong mexican influence in that area, with many shops offering clothing and other things for sale.

I hope this helps. It's difficult to pinpoint a safe area, because there are areas that aren't so nice, but if you are coming to Poughkeepsie for a job, there are some places better than others. If its not a job, I would wonder why you would want to move there at all? I left there 3 years ago.
