Unhappy Mt Peter Road

I am relocating to Warwick. My children are 20, 15, 10 and have been told how great the school systems are. The house is located on Old Mt. Peter Road. I am terrified of the winding mountains that everyone has been speaking of. Are they really very dangerous, and is there another way to get to NYC without driving over mountains? I have driven over Mt Peter. Not sure If I also drove over the Tuxedo Mountain. But I am fearful of what the mountain conditions will be like in the winter when it snows. Anyone live on Mt. Peter Rd and can give me directions to NYC by public transportation and by another route to avoid driving over mountains. Or should I not be worried, just drive slow and careful?
