Default Nyack High School?

Hi All,

After considering moving to Rockland and Westchester, my wife and I are interested in now learning more about Nyack, specifically the high school, as we have children. I already know that the Nyack district is not classicially considered the "best" by the usual metrics but it seems like it could be a decent place. Does anyone have experience or have children in the high school? Any thoughts?

Thanks!

I have lived in nyack for many years and go to the highschool, nyack is a very open-minded town with many great traditions. It is a wondeful town to grow up in, your children would love it here

Take some time and visit the school...be sure and go at the end of the day so you can see the students and then decide if this is the school you want your children to go to...you can also look up on this site the average school scores on a state exam that is given...compare the Nyack score to the other high schools in the area for a better informed decision...and yes...Nyack is pretty and has a great main street...but you can always drive there if you want to spend the day...

Nyack High School has significant socio-economic and racial diversity. To some, it is a perfect model of such diversity. To others, there are problems. There was an article a few years ago about the high school essentially being segregated by race. The economic diversity does bring a share of drug and gun violence as well.
But it's not a school that every person with affluence avoids. There are plenty of schools (Like East Ramapo), where you only would go, if you didn't have a choice. That label does not attach to Nyack High School.

Of affluent families that still choose Nyack High School, they tend to be "liberal minded." The school does have advanced placement classes. A few students each year, rank as Merit Scholars.

There are many families in Rockland County, that would put it on the "avoid" list, but that may largely be due to fear of its diversity.
