I've been staying there during the hunting season since 2000 so my opinion is limited but here goes. It seems like a quiet town, people are friendly. They have made some improvements and done some building recently. Put in a traffic circle which I'm not so sure was needed. If you are looking for a very quiet, rural life, I guess it would be OK.

I suggest you visit and stay there for a while during different seasons and such.
There's a huge Walmart in Monticello and a Home Depot there also. Monticello Racetrack too, if you like the horses.

NJ Bear is on a distinguished road
Liberty can be a bit of an odd place, located in a generally rural area but being a bigger town and with the regions' economy never having recovered from the fall of the resort industry it could be said to have some "urban blight" aspects as well. Depends on your background, what you're looking for , and what's important to you. More so than most places I think you might have to spend some time there to figure out if it works for you. Then again, if you're seeking "rural"... Liberty is one of the big towns in an otherwise pretty rural area, especially north and west but the whole area in general is predominantly rural... if that's what you seek, there's plenty of noice areas to live that would put you in proximity to Liberty, Monticello, etc. for work/business/shopping/entertainment. Lots of woods, farms large and small, etc. Job-finding can be an issue in the area, as noted above the local economy is not totally horrible but it's not buzzing either, and as such the bigger towns do have some issues. Put another way, Liberty, Monticello, etc. are probably not most people's vision of perfect small town America, but you could also do far far worse and the areas outside of the big towns are very rural, quiet, and pretty.

(some of family is from Narrowsburg area and we have a family cabin and property there, 1/2 hr or so south of Liberty)

^ yes that's some of what I was referencing in my post. You might like Livingston Manor or Roscoe if you're looking for a little smaller and a little less of "that". That's also why I mentioned some of the surrouning area as one you get out of the couple of big towns in the area it's mostly nice and rural and predominantly in my experience good hardworking people, some with a little more green/liberal slant and some with a little more conservative/htuning type of slant, but still mostly it's just good people.

No Problem! Do consider things like access to good/services/entertainment, your comfort level with the idea of critters in the yard (that includes bears, although with a just a little common sense a bear will very seldom mess with you; your trash can however is always fair game!) and also the different climate (winters can be much colder and snowier than LI, I believe Liberty averages about 70-80" of snow per season, and during a "normal" winter most days from mid-December to mid or late February it won't break 30; the snowfall can vary significantly between hilltop and valley locations too... maybe something to consider when commuting etc. too, roads can be clear in the valley and snowy or icy or even just drifting/blowing higher up).
