ya we've definitely been here, as most of the regulars here have known. We got out here, end of July 2007, and I've actually already put in a season at the winery. Beautiful does not begin to describe this whole region. I've made better friends here in the past year than I've ever had in CA.
We live in Newfield, and I am actually at the moment working at Cornell, and help out at the winery on the weekends.

Glad to hear you are doing well!! I just read through the posts.
NY is truly beautiful. Especially the area where you are now.
I also was one to do my part to support the NYS wine industry. I am really missing that here in Texas!

ya we finally moved into a house that was sitting on some decent land a few months ago..and I got some vine cuttings from my boss at the winery, and now have 5 vines growing like crazy in the area i plan to set aside as my little vineyard. Next year I'll add a lot more, but the 5 he gave me was all i could squeeze in before the planting window was over. But I will have enough grapes from these to probably make a case whenever year i do decide to harvest off of them..not this year thats for sure.

Excellent! It's nice to hear such a nice CA to NY success story.

I have never felt at "home" in CA. This is the first place, i've truly felt at home, in every aspect of the word. And my wife says the same thing.

Also just moved from CA to upstate NY. Love it so far! I moved from the mountains, so I have some snow experience - I love the fact that we are still getting lots of rain here. Is that why no one has sprinklers? (or so it seems). We have 25 acres out here and in California that would be next to impossible. Our house is a bit of a cosmetic fixer but so far so good!

ya no sprinklers because it rains enough to sustain everything. Anywhere that is as lush and green like it gets in upstate NY means it gets plenty of rain.

...While I own 3 4WD's(back roads-nightime upstate winter travel,etc..)..it's always puzzled me why I saw so many 4WD's when I've been in California. And most look like they just came out of a plastic wrap...not even a spec of dust to be seen....

huge 4wd suvs and trucks arent a necessity in CA, it's a status symbol, plain and simple. Or to some big suv's give the illusion of "more room", which has always been funny to me, because they are just pretty much enclosed trucks. If i want true extra room, i'd get a van...which I have :P
EDIT:
and this is one of my biggest gripes about CA..a lot of CA (not all mind you) is a land of "want" not "need".

I will say without hesitation, it's a great state to visit(Ca.)..but... homesteading there...not for me. Two aspects of Ca that I would have trouble with are the almost stratospheric cost of homes/land....and the lack of green/trees/water(SoCal.).
