Default Newark, New York - Good move or bad move

We are traveling to the Auburn/Newark area to seach for housing. Any and all information that you would like to share would be greatly appreciated. Also, we are looking at North Eastern Syracuse, any ideas there? Please be frank, this is a big decision.
Thanks

A few years ago on traveling to Newark I was shocked to see how much of the CBD must have been demolished for parking for what little remained. Of the many, many small towns I've been to this tendency seemed most noticeable in Newark, NY.

Surrounding Wayne County has very interesting topography due to its Drumlin field - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - but drumlins themselves are not suitable for building, if you dig into one of them you will need 10,000 ft of glacial ice pressure to put it back, and most equipment isn't rated for that. Here's a really neat thing to see, a Great Lake taking on a drumlin: New York State Parks :: Chimney Bluffs State Park Also a good lot of swampy spots between the drumlins. Shopping is in Rochester, or maybe the Waterloo outlet mall.

Waterloo and Seneca Falls are much better preserved large villages than Newark. I remember Sodus as an interesting little town, far enough from the city strips to retain some retail (although, as mentioned, it's a few years since I had a girlfriend who lived near there).

Auburn is a small city with some reminders of past greatness, and cheap big old houses. Most of my relatives there died or moved away so I don't get there as often as before. Other than the Bass Pro Shop occupying much of the older mall, or the NY 5/Grant Ave strip, shopping is in Syracuse.

Maybe Oswego would be an option, although I know little about it. Fulton usually isn't recommended on here.

I agree in that Newark has potential, but I think "urban renewal" might have hurt their Business district more than they thought it would.

Auburn is alright too. I go out there quite a bit and it is very affordable in terms of housing prices. It actually has a decent nightlife for it's size, but a lot of things are going to be done in the Syracuse area.

I like Waterloo and Seneca Falls. I think a lot of people sleep on Geneva too. Oswego is a nice little city and I liked it more than I thought when I went to college there.

As for "Northeast Syracuse", do you mean Eastwood? It is a nice part of the city that is working to improve it's Business district.

I have been sitting here trying to think about how to word this without hurting those who live in Newark who might read this.... but then I think they have to know there are problems. I was a teacher there... and there were SERIOUS problems!!!! We are talking drugs, prostitution was thought to be going on among the students, sex in the middle school, pregnancy in the middle school, bomb threats, weapons, fights.... a complete lack of respect for the staff by the students and parents... the community is depressed.... this is not an area I would EVER suggest anyone to move to. I would tell anyone to move to PALMYRA the next town over- 5 minutes down the road- lovely town and a great community if they had to be in NEWARK.... stay away from NEWARK.... MACEDON is another one I would suggest- about 15 minutes from Newark.... but stay away from Newark!!!!

I've heard things about Lyons and even Sodus and Clyde somewhat, but I didn't think it was that serious.
