i want to sell my nyc apartment and buy a home upstate, hopefully to woodstock or new paltz, but i can't figure out how the taxes work in the different zip codes. i know the "school taxes" are separate...how can i figure out what they will be for a particular house i'm considering? Are they in addition to property taxes? does the STAR program apply, if so, to whom exactly? I'm 61, will there be any further tax deduction for me when i hit 65? Are the property taxes separate from the state and town/city taxes, in other words, will i be paying state + city+ school + property for a whopping 4 part total, or what? i know i sound kind of stupid, but, well, i AM about this stuff.
i'm totally confused!!!! PLEASE HELP!!!

If you are interested in a particular house, go online to a site like Zillow, and the (somewhat accurate) property taxes are posted. The taxes shown should be the combined total of property and school taxes. If you are still interested in the property, call the listing agent and ask questions.

You can also go online to get info on STAR. It's pretty much all there.

When buying a house there's a lot of homework involved.

(And honey, by the way, you will be paying a county tax also.)

Taxes are high in those areas. We checked those areas inside out and decided to move to FL. Do you realize you will have to drive a great distance to get to shopping and civilization? (-; There are two star rebates in NY. How can you not be aware of how much you pay or will pay in taxes? Please use search option and google.

If she manages to maneuver through the real estate process and buy a house in New Paltz or Woodstock, I hope she's ready for some major culture shock.
Why do I get the feeling she doesn't know what she's in for?

I completely forgot about responding. There's one thing I miss dearly about Sullivan and Ulster Counties - it's a heaven for road cyclists. It's absolutely one of the best underrated and unknown areas. If the cycling season was longer I would most likely move in a heartbeat.

I've mentioned getting a small cottage around Ashokan reservoir but my wife doen;t want to hear about that for the time being. We shall see.
