What's up with all the Seagulls?
I'm no expert on ornithology, but I don't seem to remember seeing seagulls so far away from the ocean like I do now. Maybe they were always there and I just didn't notice, but my husband and I recently took a trip to the Fingerlakes and there are quite a few seagulls there, at least on Seneca Lake. I know they have always hung out in the Kingston area in the old Montgomery Ward parking Lot and I can understand that somewhat because the Hudson is connected to the Ocean South of us, but I don't know why they would be so far inland, I always associated Gulls with salt Ocean water. Perhaps it's large bodies of water in general? Does anyone know or care to comment? It's just one of those things that make you say, Huh?????????

There are seagulls all over the northern suburbs of Syracuse, NY.....Clay, Cicero, Liverpool, Salina, North Syracuse etc. It probably has to do with Onondaga Lake bordering us on one side, Oneida Lake on the other and Lake Ontario only an hour away. Plus the Finger Lakes are not too far away.
Personally, I've seen seagulls flying over my backyard and I live halfway between Oneida Lake and Onondaga Lake. They are a common sight in the parking lots in the North Syracuse area.

You know it's funny, but I had that same thought not that long ago when I moved to Chautauqua county from the coast. I wasn't expecting them to be so inland, but after seeing them everywhere, I realized that the Great Lakes must be a draw for them, and therefore Chautauqua lake since it's not that far. Wouldn't have thought it previously though. I'd always thought they were salt-water birds.
