I've never even HEARD of Plattsburgh!
So, this is my first post, and I hope someone here can help me.
I'm 30, single, biracial, and exploring a healthcare position in Plattsburgh (it's virtually impossible to get a job in healthcare where I live). the problem is, I live outside Philly, and know NOTHING about Plattsburgh. From what I've researched, it's a nice, small, quiet community.
But...what about social life for someone in my demographic? I've outgrown the dive bar scene and am into more of a lounge/cocktails vibe. What is the quality of single men my age there? And what is the general opinion on interracial dating?
I hope someone can help me. I've never made a move this big, and just want to make sure it's the right one, not just professionally, but personally.

You'll be fine with interracial dating as its a college town with plenty of that type of dating going on. For a single 30 year old it may be tough considering its a college town. But Montreal is only an hour away.

Yeah, Plattsburgh is a nice, smaller city of about 18,000. It has some "diversity" and it is very close to Quebec. Like garmin said, it is about an hour south of Montreal. Montreal is a very cosmopolitan city. If you are of African descent, there are neighborhoods like Little Burgundy, Pierrefonds and others with that type of cultural basis. Many are of West African and Caribbean descent, with a few that are descendants of African Americans. Of course you have the French Canadian culture there too.
As far as American cities, you might take trips to Burlington Vermont, Albany and Saratoga Springs, among others. All are cities with things to do.

Thanks for the feedback. I live outside Philly, so I'm used to much more diversity and excitement than I know I'm going to find if I do make the move.
I think that's my biggest concern. Being bored.

What are your other options...........?
Have to say that I am about as big a Pburgh supporter as there is, but think if you are thirty and into the bar/cocktail scene, there are only a few places where you will feel comfy. It is definitely getting better year by year, but there are many more redneck and VFW/military socializing places and drinking places outside the city for farmers and locals, then there are the established crowd who are here because their grandparents were from here.....that part is changing also..........
For professional thirty-somethings check out the webpage for Irises wine and cafe bar and also Anthony's........There is a place called the Green Room that is fairly large and also a place called Olive Ridleys that has decent bands year round. I think overall Olive Ridleys is pretty good bet for the thirties crowd........We do have a couple of sports bar places and of course all the hotels have a dance room etc and we do have an Applebees where some out of towners go since it is near the hotel area of town..........Geoffrey's Pub caters to a little older crowd. There are a couple of places I would definitely tell you not to waste your time even going because my early twenties daughter/friends hang there unless you are interested in that............I am sure if you have an education and a decent hospital job and half a personality you will not have any trouble meeting people. However, if you are looking for better relationship odds, you should definitely check out Bton VT. Lots of people your age and very cool people with tons of causes and festivals and events to further global issues. Pburgh is more just a small town in between NYC/Albany and Montreal............No scintillating nightlife here. There are a couple of great music venues in Bton as well.........nominal fee to see national acts.........called Higher Ground. It is very easy to get to from Pburgh and they also have their own website.............
Montreal is a bit farther and soooo much larger, but is so cosmopolitan if you love the city. The numbers and demographics and type of meeting places are sooooo much more skewed to a thirty something crowd in those places than here. There are tons of college aged places to hang and drink and then you have tons of families and of course there are some thirties, but overall, I wouldn't want to be here and be thirty, single and looking. You can probably get an idea of women your age from the dating sites looking at the Pburgh area.....like Yahoo, Match, whatever.........Good luck with all of it!

If you took Pottstown, PA out of the metro Philly area & placed it in North Central PA you would have Plattsburgh. Williamsport, PA (if you have ever been there) is very similar as well (though Williamsport & Pottstown are both a little bigger & a little more racially diverse).
Plattsburgh doesn't have much to do for a 20 or 30 something person who is still looking for nightlife type fun, though it is a great location if you are into the outdoors & wouldn't mind small town life. Burlington, VT has more options but with the ferry ride it is a good hour away. Montreal is a fantastic city for entertainment but the dominant language is French, which could pose a problem if you don't know the language (though many do speak English as well) ...... Quebecois also are not exactly known for their hospitality.

As long as you make an effort to parle Francais, they seem to be more open towards helping people, from what I've heard.

Pottstown, huh? That certainly does paint a picture. Thank you for relating it to something I'm familiar with. I grew up in the Lower Gwynedd/Blue Bell area (if you are familiar). Not a big Pottstown person.
