Muslim family considering moving to Brewster, Carmel or Patterson county - worried
My husband and I are looking to buy a house this year! We would like to move out of the city in one of the areas about an hour from NYC near the lake (my husband loves to fish). We've found some affordable housing in Brewster, Carmel, Kent and Patterson counties.
We have some concerns and would welcome any HONEST feedback. We are practicing Muslims and this is obvious from our way of dress. We would like to know how multi-cultural these areas are and if they would be neighborly despite our difference. We have had a terrible time in the city (especially me, threats with my children of bodily harm ) and looking for a place we can raise our children peacefully.
I plan on homeschooling and running a small affordable learning center from home.
The second part of the question is if there is a need for daycare/before/after-care services out that way, and how do you think parents would react to an Islamic run center (like a Christian run center)?
I'm quite sure there are Muslims out there who would be interested in my services and maybe even some non-Muslims. But I don’t really know.
Are there any places of worship for Muslims in these areas?
I apologize in advance for so many questions , however I am originally from Philadelphia and I'm not familiar with NYC let alone it's surrounding counties. However I would love the opportunity to live out in one of these places so that my children can have some place to run around and play and where can have a good homeschooling experience.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
Peace - muslimmommy

You might also want to look on the CT side of the border. Property taxes are considerbly lower (around $3500 for a single family that sells for around $350,000).
Good luck

thank you
Thank you Jon,
For posting back. Can u tell me, are their any muslims in the Brewster area. Mainly because I was thinking of starting a family daycare. I'm not sure how well received I would be, by non-muslims, though my services are open to EVERYONE. Where we currently live, I'm not well received at all.
I didn't know that CT had lower taxes, however my husband is a employee with the NYC and needs to maintain a residence in one of the five boroughs, Putman County or Westerchester County. I just like the country like setting out the. It seems so peaceful!
Thanks again for the info.

I don't know if they are have and I can't really say. Try looking up some census data & town demographics online. I do think it's silly as well about the residency requirment because there are some parts of CT that are just as close & the tax situation is much better.

I find it a disgrace that you have been unwelcomed by people in the city.
Pure and total ignorance.

Thank you all
I can understand to a point. I can acceptthe stars and even some comments, however I can not and will not accept the threats, especially with my young children. It's down right scary. But it's people nature to generalize. I am aware of that. I just want some peace for myself and my children. And I guess seeing the properties so affordable in upstate NY, we can get an acre of land for with a old house in the low 200K. We're not fancy people. I just think about my kids running around on the land. Being kids with no worries about someone threatening there mother because she looks different.
Thank you all for the information. We'll have to take a trip up there an visit the local stores and parks. I really just want a little piece of property were our children can go outside and play without grown people harassing us while we sit in front of our own home.
Again thanks for support and information.
