Yes I did thank you for the suggestion.
I think until a house is built that style would be impractical.
I think for now just going up as much as possible, in it self makes a statement and serves many purposes.
Yesterday I printed the hunting schedule for the area. Since the bulk of activity is hunters and snowmobile activity there is still a couple of months to go. As for ATV I'll have to listen while I am there.

..NJMike...I guess it's unfortunate you're place isin't next to mine. The security/maint work I've done on the side is for properties within a 5 mile range from my place. Two places(one bordering me, one a 1/4 mile away)....I always carry a trash bag on my daily walks w/the dog...Pick up roadside litter by these 2 places and have "called for a friend"(You know what I mean) when I thought someone was messing w/the propertie(s). I mention these 2 places as they're both held by absentee landowners. One is from NY, the other, NJ. Why do I bother doing this for free?....wether living here or not..they're neighbors.

New Jersey Mike - if this means anything to you - I was once advised by a local (during a weak moment) that flatlanders/downstaters were a natural resorce which needed to be harvested. Keep that in mind when dealing with them. They really mean it.

Everybody is a resource in one way or another. I don't want to be viewed as a money pit or a fool who does not know any better. Since I originally posted I can see I support the local economy and the ecology. I was well aware of the value of the property and the 40 acres of farm fields and woodland, I was having a problem getting the hay cut along with much needed brush hogging so I purchased my own tractor. I chose a local dealer but also knew he was overcharging but at that point I was more concerned about the property and getting the work done. We have had the property for 3 years have yet to build a garage or house but I am getting most of the property project done. I decided to buy a grapple for my tractor I called my local guy for a quote and he was one of the highest. I would have thought he would have seen the value of my continued business and had mentioned to him about pricing. But I guess that did not matter, so made my purchase with another local dealer who had a very aggressive price and went out of his way to get the grapple delivered on a weekend I was up and eager to work.
I still believe I will continue to make some good friends upstate but for now I am the outsider, what I am also learning is the sense of community that they all have and that I am looking to be apart of. As as I see it it's much like a club and I guess you have to pay your dues.
I know they are beginning to understand who we are as they drive by seeing us working and the improvements we are making.
Maybe we are seen as not the normal down stater either...
Some are still trying to tap me for money and I guess that's somewhat of a norm, it's my responsibility to know the proper price for the work I am considering or that is my fault if I over pay.
I did have someone dump more tires and I suspect it's the same person who lives on the same road somewhere . Maybe I will need to put up a different sign other then private property,
WTF neighbor
please no dumping
u know who you are

Are you still staying in hotels? If you are, what about renting an RV for the weekend or possibly buying an used camper or RV and leaving it on site. You could move it when you need water or empty out the sewage. Just a thought.

Yep.. I negotiated a 50.00 rate anytime I go. Which really is not bad. We are going to build a garage first so I have a space for the tractor and attachments. Is really the logistics to being able to work on the tractor and having water and electric.
I want to do a lot of the work myself and then it becomes a scheduling issue. My wife said we should take our summer vacation upstate and get the things done. She a GEM, she works a full time job and more. I could not do that to her so I took her away to a beach for a vacation. Some times when we are there she works harder then me. I want to teach her to drive the tractor but she won't yet.
With what is happening the government right now I need to put the garage and house in high gear, I have NO idea where interest rates will be going.
This will be a second home and for that reason and we currently live in a log home that needs work, so we want more then a trailer or RV.
What cost more then the room is the gas to up and down each time , it's about 120 - 130 dollars and I try to go once a month.
I guess all in good time..

Oh I just meant a RV or camper as a temporary crash pad. Have you started thinking about what you'll do for the house? I know there's a lot of modular homes built out that way. My last house was a 2-story Colonial modular. You'd never know it was trucked in unless you went into the basement and saw the bracing and ties.
The gas back and forth must be brutal! Do you plan on retiring to the family land?

I know this kinda skews off topic...was always amazed at the folks who commute from the lower Catskills/Poconos to NYC each work day...one guy I met while on a work assignment in north Jersey, told me his total house to job travel time, catskills-Jersey......2 hours ea/way....on a good day...insane.
