Saranac Lake (looking 2 move there)
Hi everyone,
I am asking about the Saranac Lake area, I am looking to move from Long Island to upstate by next year. I was wondering if I will be able to buy a nice home with a little bit of land and perhaps a little rural (private) for $500,000.I'm looking for the type of home where I can go out and just see lots of nature instead of another house right on top of mine, I have lived in the city and burbs for a while now and as I get older I wanna have a lil less noise and peace in my life
Also does anyone know any real estate agents that I can contact in that area.
Also how is that area? Is it a safe town. Are there stores around there/banks doctors etc.are things easy to get to and also what are some nice peaceful scenic towns to live in that area any help would be greatly appreciated thanks so much have a great day all

I have lived in the area for my whole life but now have to move to TX due to military move. I will miss it here so much!SL is definitely a safe little town. Better choice than Lake Placid which is very tourist driven. Beware however, if you find yourself needing to buy underpants or anything remotely "day to day" you will have to drive an hour to Plattsburgh or Malone to find your nearest Walmart or big box store. Otherwise, prepare to pay ridiculous prices. Your budget will get you a great peace of land but if you want it to be rural you may want to check out the Adirondack Park Agency website as they have very stringent regulations on land usage within the ADK park. If you google Saranac Lake and the chamber of commerce there will be a listing of Real Estate agents. Cherrie Sayles real estate is always a good place to start. Also in your budget you may want to check out realtors in Lake Placid, they generally have great parcels of land that are pricier but very beautiful. Good luck with your search!

Also, FYI we are not "upstate". We are northern NY. EEK. Upstate only covers as far north as Albany.

There is an outlet mall in Lake Placid and many mom and pop clothing stores in the Tri-Lakes area(Tupper Lake, Saranac Lake and Lake Placid) too. Here's some examples: http://www.ruthiesrun.com/

Store Locations
There is a Family Dollar and Dollar Tree in Saranac Lake for "day to day" things as well.

You are the third person.....
this summer that is semi or retiring to SL that I know of personally. One couple is actually coming from FLA but are from Syracuse area originally and are just sick of traffic, crime and mean people they say. They had a "camp" up here for half the year, but are now going to stay through the winter. The other person is from LI also and has parents who moved here 10 years ago and now she is more into the outdoors and wants to be closer to relatives. You name an outdoor activity and she does it. You are not alone. I think there may be a mini boom coming here the worse things get in the larger cities.......SL is extremely safe and you will never ever find nicer people in the entire world than your neighbors in this northern part of NY. And it's freaking beautiful all year long!

LiSuffolkgal, Saranac Lake is the most unique village (municipal corporation) in New York State:
Some 75 or so villages are located in two or more towns. There are 7 villages which are in two counties. Only one village, the Village of Saranac Lake (incorporated in 1892), is in 3 towns and 2 counties:
Parts of the Village of Saranac Lake are in the Town of North Elba and the Town of St. Armand in Essex County and parts of the Village of Saranac Lake are in the Town of Harrietstown in Franklin County.
The village is named after the Upper, Middle and Lower Saranac Lakes, which are nearby, but not in the village (Lower Saranac Lake is a half mile west of the village). The northern reaches of Lake Flower, which is part of the Saranac River, lie within the village.
The Town of Saranac is an entirely separate entity, 33 miles to the northeast.

I too am looking to relocate to Saranac Lake (SL). I am Jamaican. Do you know of any other Jamaicans in Saranac Lake or close enough to SL?

I'm not sure if there are any other Jamaicans in SL. You will have Black people in Plattsburgh, around Paul Smiths and at the Community College there in SL. Lake Placid will have a few, as will Tupper Lake, Ogdensburg, Gouverneur and Massena. Potsdam and Canton will as well due to the colleges there.
Ottawa and Montreal aren't too far and both will have relatively large Caribbean communities.
Here's an interesting article I came across from the Saranac Lake newspaper: Sweet Season - AdirondackDailyEnterprise.com | News, Sports, Jobs, Saranac Lake region — Adirondack Daily Enterprise

LiSuffolkgal,
How familiar are you with the Adirondacks, e.g., winter, bug season, living in a remote area?
