Now the nitty gritty...
As I said in a previous post my wife, daughter, and i will be moving to the finger lakes region of NY. When we touch down in September, i will have a job waiting for me, working the harvest for a winery in Burdett, that will last me until November. Then after that I will be learning for free at nights and on weekends until the next harvest. After harvest I will be needing a full time job to last me until the next one. My wife will also need a job as soon as we touch down. Can you guys help me with what the best ways of finding jobs in that area are? I visited the city websites of many cities looking for job openings, i have links for most of the newspapers in that area, for their classifieds, but I've been noticing most of the jobs arent usually listed on the big sites (craigslist, monster, career builder, etc.) and am at a lost where to look for openings, other than where we've mentioned. Any help would be appreciated.
We want to sort of live somewhere we can be in between all the potential cities we will have to go to regularly for work (Ithaca, Burdett, Corning, etc...). My wife will be going up in June to scout out apartments, and find us a place thats a right fit for us. But the job thing is the only thing that has me worried. Unemployment seems low, but i dont know where all ya'll list your jobs LOL.

Jobs are scarse unless you're nearer to Syracuse or Rochester. Job-wise, DON'T go unless you have something lined up for after the harvest, job-wise. You will regret it. Trust me.

it's kind of hard considering most of these places arent places that hire from far away or work via emails and phones.

Well...you can find work...depends how "flexible" (picky) you are. My wife and I lost good paying jobs here in the 90's. I now work a couple of jobs to match the one. My wife has a good job, but not at the pay levels we used to have. ADAPT and OVERCOME. I feel the extra work hours are worth the rural life we and our kids have here. If I knew more of your background(and wife's), I might/might not be able to steer you towards the better area for jobs. I think I remember you saying you're coming from Ca.?...This isin't Ca. Pay scales don't match what I saw out there.

trust me, lol, i know. I'm leaving a job at 18/hr to work at a winery for 10/hr during harvest. But what I'm probably going to do is get my Class A CDL license before we leave, as a backup...so that if i cant find an office job..the one thing there are always jobs in is trucking, and at a very good wage too...shoot i might just go straight into that, and not bother with the office anymore. there are LOCAL trucking jobs out there that start at 40k (which in that area is a VERY decent wage), and i can still be home on nights and weekends.

...Well, then I'd reccomend you find a place to rent to the east of Burdett(initially) towards Ithaca(jobs) or south of Watkins Glen to access Rt. 17 easier(jobs). By the way...does the winery you're going to begin with the letter "H"?....Just curious. My wife and I have "done" the winery thing during the fall of most years.

No it doesnt start with an H, and that is where we are looking to live...outside of Ithaca, so we are in between all the cities we need. I will be working harvest, and then interning non harvest months, to learn the trade, with the end goal of going full time in the industry, and one day owning our own vineyard/winery. The winery is in Burdett, but we're looking to live in Horseheads/Watkins/Montour/Corning, etc....are the highways maintained regularly in the winter (snow clearing)?

..Was just guessing as to the winery. Good luck at whatever one you're headed for. Living just outside Ithaca(to the west) would be a good plan. Have you accessed the Ithaca paper online to see about work/jobs? Roads in upstate NY are maintained "fairly" well during the winter(compared to places that get less snow/less prepared). Just a thought. If you don't have one already...a smaller(better mpg) SUV..would be a plus for commuting here. I've seen many an older rust free SUV when out in Ca. Buy one and drive it here. If it's pre 96'....no emissions check(less $$). If you want more info as you get closer to your move..we should probably continue this discussion off the regular forum. I'm not "Mr. Information"..but I'll offer info where I think it may be useful/helpful to your move....................
